Is Your Passion a Short Lived Interest? Find Out Now!

by Rod Nichol

Okay, so I’ve been jumping around different hobbies lately, you know, that feeling when you’re super into something for, like, a week, and then poof – onto the next thing? I’m calling it my “short-lived interest” phase. Figured I’d scribble down what I’ve been up to, mostly to keep track of myself, maybe to laugh at it later.

The Great Pottery Experiment

First up was pottery. Saw a cool video online, and suddenly I needed to make my own wonky mugs. I went all in.

  • Bought a cheap pottery wheel online. Thing wobbled like crazy, but hey, it spun!
  • Got a bunch of clay. Way too much, actually. My tiny apartment suddenly looked like a mud pit.
  • Watched, like, a million YouTube tutorials. Everyone made it look so easy! Spoiler: it’s not.

I spent a solid three days trying to “center” the clay. That’s apparently the first step, getting it perfectly balanced on the wheel. Mine looked like a lopsided blob monster most of the time. I did manage to make one… thing. It resembled a bowl, kinda. After it dried, it cracked in half. Pottery: 1, Me: 0.

The Ukulele Serenade (That Wasn’t)

Next, I decided I was going to become a ukulele virtuoso. Because why not? I envisioned myself strumming lovely tunes, maybe even writing my own songs!

  • Ordered a bright pink ukulele. Figured if I was going to fail, I’d fail in style.
  • Downloaded a ukulele lesson app. It promised I’d be playing songs in “minutes!” Lies. All lies.
  • Tried to learn some basic chords. My fingers felt like clumsy sausages.

I practiced (if you can call it that) for about four days. Managed to learn a very, very rough version of “Three Blind Mice.” My cat hid under the sofa every time I picked up the ukulele. I think that was a sign.

The “Let’s Learn to Knit” Debacle

Okay, so maybe music wasn’t my thing. I moved onto knitting! Everyone loves a cozy, hand-knitted scarf, right?

  • Went to the craft store and bought enough yarn to knit a blanket for a giant. I had no idea what I was doing.
  • Found some “beginner-friendly” knitting patterns online. They were not beginner-friendly.
  • Tried to cast on. This is apparently how you start. It involved a lot of tangled yarn and frustrated sighs.

I spent a week wrestling with the yarn and needles. Ended up with a tangled mess that vaguely resembled a… well, I’m not sure what it resembled. A bird’s nest, maybe? My cat seemed to enjoy playing with it, so at least someone got some use out of it. Yarn is now cat’s toy.

So, that’s where I’m at. A whirlwind of short-lived interests. I’ve got clay under my fingernails, a pink ukulele gathering dust, and a ball of yarn that’s seen better days. Who knows what next week will bring? Maybe I’ll try juggling chainsaws. (Just kidding… mostly.)
