That kimono, you know, that Japanese thing, it’s something else. I saw them city girls wearing them, all fancy like. They call it “Kitsuke“. Sounds like a sneeze, don’t it? But it’s how they put on those kimono things. Lots of layers, like an onion, and all sorts of bits and bobs to go with it. Not like my old dress, just throw it on and go.
Now, if you wanna put on one of them kimono, you best stand in front of a big mirror. Gotta see what you’re doing, right? Otherwise, you’ll be all backwards and inside out. Just like looking at the darn thing itself in the mirror helps you figure out which way is up!
Alright, so you wanna know how to put on this fancy Japanese Kimono, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it ain’t like pulling on your Sunday best. I will try to tell you how to put on this kimono. It is a little bit complicated but you listen to me.
First, you gotta hold that right side, the side with the fancy pattern, yeah, that one. Then you wrap it around, like you’re swaddling a baby, but to the left side. Hold it tight now, don’t let it slip. You should wrap it to your left side.
Now they say you gotta measure some of the fabric. What do they call it? One third of a tie? Something like that. And then you need to put it on the back, where the stitching is. I don’t know, seems like a lot of fuss to me. You need to put it on your back seam. This is a special kimono wearing skill.
This kimono, they call it “thing to wear.” Well, ain’t that something? It’s a dress, plain and simple, but they make it sound so important. They are all wrapped up in the front, got square sleeves, like a box, and it’s all straight up and down, like a board. And listen to this, they always wrap the left side over the right. Always. Don’t know why, just the way they do it.
If you are going to wear a kimono, you need to be patient. It is not easy to wear a kimono. Those Japanese people, they sure like to make things complicated, don’t they? All these steps and rules, just to put on a dress. But I guess if you wanna look all fancy like them city folks, you gotta put in the work.
Here are some things that you might need to use when you are wearing kimono:
- A big mirror, I told you before, you need to see yourself clearly.
- The kimono, of course. It is the most important thing.
- Your hands. Use them to wrap the kimono.
- Your body, to wear the kimono, haha.
I heard that if you are a beginner, you need to practice a lot. You can try to wear a kimono everyday. It may takes you a lot of time. Don’t worry. Just be patient. You can do it.
And you know what else? They got all these fancy names for every little part of that kimono. Like that belt thing, the obi, they call it. It’s like a big sash, all tied up in a bow in the back. And they got special socks, tabi, they call ’em. White socks, with a little split for your big toe. Keeps your feet warm, I suppose.
Then there’s the shoes, well, more like sandals. They call them geta or zori. They look like they’re made of wood. Click-clack, click-clack, when you walk. Can’t imagine they’re very comfortable, but they sure look fancy. They make a lot of noise.
And don’t even get me started on the hair. They put their hair up in all sorts of fancy styles, with pins and combs and flowers. Takes hours, I bet. I just tie mine back in a bun and call it a day. Ain’t nobody got time for all that fuss, not when there’s work to be done.
But you know, I gotta admit, those kimono do look pretty. All those colors and patterns, like a garden in full bloom. And when they walk, they glide, like they’re floating on air. It’s a sight to behold, I tell ya. Maybe that is the reason why it is so popular. It looks really good!
So, if you ever get a chance to try on a kimono, go for it. It might be a bit of a hassle, but it’s an experience, that’s for sure. Just remember what I told ya, left over right, and hold on tight! You can also ask others for help.
And don’t forget to stand up straight and tall, like you’re proud to be wearing that fancy dress. Even if you feel like you’re wrapped up like a mummy, just smile and pretend you know what you’re doing. That’s what I always do, works like a charm! And don’t forget to take some photos. It would be fun to look at them in the future.
