So, I saw these “grinch grass dunks” floating around online and thought, “Hey, those look kinda cool, I should try making them.” Honestly, they looked pretty easy, just some green-dyed coconut flakes stuck onto something. I figured I could whip these up, no problem.

First things first, I grabbed a big bag of shredded coconut from the grocery store. I’m pretty sure it was the unsweetened kind, but honestly, who cares? It’s all getting dyed green anyway. Then I snagged some green food coloring, the liquid kind, not the gel stuff. I always mess up with the gel stuff, so liquid it is.

Next, I dumped a bunch of the coconut into a big ziplock bag. No measuring, just eyeballed it. Then I started adding the food coloring, a few drops at a time. I zipped up the bag and started squishing it around, trying to get the color all mixed in.

It took a little while to get it the right shade of green. I kept adding a little more coloring, squishing, adding more, squishing some more, you get the idea. I was going for a bright, grassy green, not some weird, dull color.

Once I was happy with the color, I spread the coconut out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. I wanted it to dry out a bit so it wouldn’t be all soggy when I tried to stick it onto stuff.

Drying Time

This took way longer than I thought it would. I left it out for a few hours, but it was still kinda damp. So I popped it in the oven at the lowest temperature for a little while, just to speed things up. Keep an eye on it if you do this, you don’t want to burn it!

Finally, after what felt like forever, the coconut was dry and ready to go. It looked just like that fake grass you put in Easter baskets, but green. Perfect! Then it was just a matter of sticking this “grinch grass” onto whatever I felt like dunking. I ended up using some plain cookies and white chocolate, which turned out great. They looked pretty cool and tasted even better! The cookies were good, but the best part was seeing my kids’ faces when they saw the result. They thought it was the coolest thing ever.

All in all, it was a fun little project. A little messy, sure, but definitely worth it. Give it a try, it is not that hard!
