Remembering Jack Smith Sports Authority: A Sporting Goods Icon

by Joyce Mackintosh

Well, let me tell you about this Jack Smith fella and that Sports Authority thing. It’s a big story, ya know, like them big melons we used to grow back home. This Jack, he started this whole thing, this Sports Authority, way back in 1987. Can you believe it? 1987! That’s like, a long, long time ago. I was still young enough to chase chickens then, ha!

He started it in a little place, Fort Lauderdale, they call it. Just one store, imagine that! Like a little seed you plant in the ground, hoping it grows. And boy, did it grow! This Sports Authority, it got big, real big. Like one of them giant oak trees, you know, the ones that have been around forever.

Jack Smith, the man behind the store

They say Jack, he was a smart fella. A “visionary,” they called him. That just means he had a good idea and knew how to make it happen. He turned that one little store into a whole bunch of stores, all over the place. Must have been a lot of work, like hoeing a whole field by yourself.

  • Started in 1987
  • One store in Fort Lauderdale
  • Became a huge company

He wasn’t just about selling stuff, though. He was a big shot in some sports group too, the NSGA, they called it. Sounded fancy. Probably had to wear a suit and tie all the time, poor fella. Suits are itchy, you know. Much prefer my old apron.

Now, this Sports Authority, it became one of the biggest sports stores around. You could get anything there, they say. Balls, bats, shoes, even those fancy workout clothes. Like a general store, but for sports stuff. I reckon even my old man woulda found something he liked there, and he only cared about horseshoes and fishing poles!

From small beginnings to big business

It’s funny how things work. One minute you got a little shop, the next minute you got a whole empire. That Jack, he must have been a busy man, always running around, making deals, and talking to people. Probably didn’t have time to sit down and enjoy a good cup of coffee, like we do. Always rushing, those city folk.

But then, you know, things change. Jack, he up and quit one day. Said he had “other interests.” Maybe he wanted to go fishing, or maybe he just got tired of all the fuss. Who knows? People are strange sometimes, doing things you don’t expect.

Even though he left, that Sports Authority, it kept going for a while. People still went there to buy their sports stuff. But it’s not the same without the fella who started it all. It’s like having a garden without the gardener. Things start to wilt and fade after a while.

A legacy in sporting goods

They say Jack Smith was the chairman, whatever that means. Sounded important. He was also a director somewhere else, another big company, Carrols Corp. This fella, he sure got around. Always busy, busy, busy. Like a bee in a sunflower patch.

So, that’s the story of Jack Smith and the Sports Authority. A fella with a good idea who built something big. And then, one day, he moved on to something else. Life’s like that, you know. Things come and go, like the seasons. You just gotta enjoy it while it lasts, and maybe buy a good pair of shoes while you’re at it.

I reckon Jack Smith did alright for himself. Started with nothin’ and made somethin’ big. That’s the American dream, ain’t it? Work hard, have a good idea, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll end up with your name on a big ol’ store. Or at least a good fishing pole.

Remembering the man and his store

Even though Sports Authority ain’t around no more, people still remember it. And they remember Jack Smith, the fella who made it all happen. It’s like them old stories you hear ’round the fire, they stay with you even after the fire’s gone out.

So, next time you’re in a big sports store, think about Jack Smith. Think about that little store in Fort Lauderdale, and how it all started. And remember, even the biggest things start small, like a tiny seed growing into a mighty tree, or a little idea turning into a big ol’ Sports Authority.
