Now, this Flora Rheta Schreiber, she wrote it all down. This ain’t some made-up story, they say it’s true. Happened to a real woman, Shirley Ardell Mason, though they called her Sybil Dorsett in the book to protect her, I reckon. Poor thing had a rough childhood, real rough. Folks hurt her somethin’ awful, and that’s what made her mind split up like that, they say.
This doctor, Cornelia B. Wilbur, she tried to help Sybil. Tried to figure out who all them different folks inside her were and put her back together, like a broken plate. Must’ve been harder than milkin’ a cow in January, I tell ya. Think about it, one minute you’re talkin’ to one person, and then bam! Someone else is lookin’ out at ya. Scary, if ya ask me.
- Sybil’s Story: It’s about how this woman, Sybil, got sixteen different personalities. Real sad stuff, all ’cause of the bad things that happened to her when she was little.
- The Doctor’s Work: Then there’s this doctor lady tryin’ to help her. Tough job, I’d say. Like tryin’ to catch smoke with your hands.

They made movies outta this book, too. Guess lots of folks wanted to see this Sybil’s story. I ain’t seen ’em myself, but I heard they’re pretty good. Sally Field, she played Sybil. Good actress, that one.
There’s all sorts of talk in the book about “dissociative identity disorder.” Big words, huh? Means your mind’s all jumbled up, like a ball of yarn the cat got ahold of. They used to call it “multiple personality disorder.” Sounds about right to me.
This book, it ain’t just some light readin’, ya know? It makes ya think. Makes ya think about how bad some folks can be to each other, and how that can mess a person up for life. It also makes ya think about how strong people can be, even when they’re broken inside.
Some folks, they wanna study this book, dig deep into what it all means. They got study guides and all that. Character analysis, they call it. Figurin’ out who all them different personalities are and why they act the way they do. Me, I just read it like it is. Plain and simple.
I heard someone say the book was a “spellbinding bestseller.” Well, I don’t know about spellbindin’, but it sure kept me readin’. Couldn’t put it down, even when the biscuits started burnin’ in the oven. And “bestseller,” that just means lots of folks bought it, right? Well, I can see why.
There’s this one part, Chapter 15, they call it “Battered Child.” That’s where they talk about all the bad stuff that happened to Sybil when she was little. Hard to read, but important, I guess. Helps ya understand why she ended up the way she did.
