These here Nike Dunks, they’s somethin’ else, ain’t they? I seen ’em, these Nike Dunks Ghost, they call ’em. Ghost! Like somethin’ you’d see in one of them spooky movies.
My grandson, he’s always on about these newfangled shoes. Says they’re all the rage. Says these Nike Dunks are what all the young folks are wearin’. I reckon they are pretty popular, I see them everywhere nowadays.
I don’t know nothin’ about no basketball, but he says they used to be for that. Then the skateboard fellas got a hold of ’em. Now everybody’s wearin’ ’em. Nike Dunks Ghost, regular Nike Dunks, don’t matter. They all just Nike Dunks to me. But these Ghost ones, they got a special name, I guess.
He was tellin’ me about how you gotta be careful. Lots of folks out there tryin’ to sell ya fakes. Fake Nike Dunks! Can you believe it? Tryin’ to pass ’em off as the real deal. He says you gotta look at the stitchin’. Real ones got nice, even stitchin’. Fake ones, it’s all messy. Like a chicken scratched it.
And the logo, the Nike thing on the back. It’s gotta be stitched on just right. Not too thick, not too thin. Just right. And the holes, the little holes on the front. Gotta be punched clean. These young folks and their shoes, they got all these rules.

He showed me this tag on the inside, with a bunch of numbers. Says you can type them numbers in somewhere on that internet thing and it tells ya if they’re real. I don’t know about all that. Seems like a lot of fuss over a pair of shoes. I always bought my shoes from the local shop. Good quality, and not expensive.
He says these Nike Dunks Ghost, they ain’t even out yet. Says they’re comin’ soon. But no one knows exactly when. Kids these days, they get all excited about these things. Waitin’ in lines and such. I remember waitin’ in line for the bread truck, back in the day. Different times, I reckon. Back then, no one will be that crazy for a pair of shoes.
He wants a pair, he says. These Nike Dunks Ghost. Gotta have ’em, he says. I told him, “Boy, you got more shoes than a centipede.” But he don’t listen. He’s got that look in his eye. The one that says he ain’t gonna rest till he gets ’em. I saw a lot of shoes in my day, but never a pair called “Ghost”.
I don’t know what’s so special about these Nike Dunks, especially these Ghost ones. They look like regular shoes to me. Maybe a little different color. But shoes is shoes, far as I’m concerned. These old feet of mine, they don’t care what they’re in, long as they’re comfortable.
He says they gotta be “broken in.” These Nike Dunks. Like they’re a wild horse or somethin’. Says it takes a few wears. Some folks, it takes longer. Depends on the shoe, he says. And your feet, I guess. I don’t know. My shoes never needed no breakin’ in. I just hope he can get the shoes soon. I don’t want to hear him talk about these shoes everyday.
He’s always goin’ on about this one and that one. Showin’ me pictures on his phone. Nike Dunks this, Nike Dunks that. It’s all a blur to me. But these Ghost ones, they seem to have caught his eye somethin’ fierce. If you want to buy a pair of shoes, just go to the shop and pick one. Why make it so complicated?
He keeps talkin’ about shoppin’ for ’em. Says there’s a whole world of these Nike Dunks out there. And he’s gotta know everything before he buys a pair. These kids and their information. We just wore what we had. It is good that young people have so many choices nowadays. But sometimes I think they have too many.
Last year, he was all about some other shoes. Now it’s these Nike Dunks Ghost. Next year, it’ll be somethin’ else. Kids. They’re always chasin’ the next big thing. I think it is because they are still young. They have a lot of energy and they want to try new things.
Anyway, I hope he gets his shoes. And I hope they’re comfortable. And I hope he don’t start talkin’ about some other shoes next week. One pair of these fancy shoes is enough for this old lady to hear about. Nike Dunks Ghost, regular Nike Dunks, they’re all just shoes to me. But I am happy if he is happy. That is the most important thing. These shoes must be very good, because everyone is talking about them.
