Grunge Sexy Makeup: Easy Looks for Everyday Wear

by Joyce Mackintosh

Alright, alright, let’s talk about this grunge sexy thing, whatever that is. Sounds like somethin’ the youngsters are into these days. You know, back in my day, “sexy” was just puttin’ on a clean dress and maybe a little bit of rouge, if you were feelin’ fancy. But hey, times change, I guess.

Grunge Sexy Makeup: Easy Looks for Everyday Wear

So, from what I gather, this grunge sexy is all about lookin’ a little rough around the edges, but still kinda…allurin’, you know? Like you didn’t try too hard, but you still look good. Kinda like when you been workin’ in the garden all day, and your hair’s a mess, and you got dirt on your face, but you still got that…sparkle in your eye. Yeah, somethin’ like that.

Now, the girls these days, they got all these fancy names for things. “Subtle grunge” they call it. Like, puttin’ on some gray eyeshadow and brown lipstick. Sounds kinda dull to me, but what do I know? They say it’s supposed to make your eyes look smoky, mysterious-like. I guess it’s like when you been standin’ over a smoky fire pit cookin’ up some grub, and your eyes get all hazy. Maybe that’s what they’re goin’ for.

Then there’s the lips. They talk about “big bold lips” and “strikin’ eye looks.” Sounds like a lot of work, if you ask me. Back in my day, you just put on some lipstick, and that was that. But these girls, they want their lips to be the star of the show, I guess. Make ’em all pouty and full. And the eyes, they gotta be somethin’ special too. All kinds of colors and lines and whatnot. I tell ya, it’s a whole production.

One fella, Murray I think his name was, he says you gotta use some special cream shadow and eyeliner to get this look right. Says you can “dance all night” and it won’t smudge. Well, I ain’t danced all night in ages, but I guess if you’re gonna be out there shakin’ your tail feathers, you want your makeup to stay put. Makes sense, I suppose.

  • Eyes: So for the eyes, you gotta make ’em look all dark and smoky. Like you ain’t slept in a week, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. Gray eyeshadow, black eyeliner, maybe a little bit of shimmer if you’re feelin’ sassy.
  • Lips: Now, the lips, they can be whatever color you want, as long as it’s bold. Red, brown, even black, if you’re feelin’ rebellious. Just make sure it’s noticeable. You want people to look at your lips and say, “Well, ain’t she somethin’?”
  • Face: Keep the rest of your face pretty simple. A little bit of foundation, maybe some blush, but nothin’ too fancy. You want the focus to be on your eyes and lips. That’s the whole point of this grunge sexy thing, I reckon.

And don’t forget the hair! It’s gotta be a little messy, a little undone. Like you just rolled outta bed and didn’t even bother to brush it. But you gotta make it look intentionally messy, if you know what I mean. Not just plain sloppy. There’s a difference, you see. Maybe a little bit of teasing, a little bit of hairspray, and you’re good to go.

Grunge Sexy Makeup: Easy Looks for Everyday Wear

They got all sorts of tutorials and guides online, these days. You can just look up “grunge makeup” and you’ll find a million different ways to do it. Pinterest, they call it. Full of ideas and inspiration. I tell ya, it’s a whole different world than when I was a young gal. We didn’t have no fancy internet to tell us how to put on our makeup. We just figured it out as we went along.

But hey, if these young girls wanna spend hours in front of the mirror makin’ themselves look all grunge sexy, that’s their business. Me, I’ll stick to my clean dress and a little bit of rouge. It’s worked for me all these years, ain’t no need to change now. But I gotta say, some of these looks, they ain’t half bad. Kinda makes me wish I was a young gal again, just for a little while. Just to see what all the fuss is about, you know? But then again, I remember how much work it was just to keep a clean house and put food on the table. Maybe I’m better off stickin’ to what I know. After all, sexy is as sexy does, ain’t it? And that don’t need no fancy makeup, just a good heart and a strong spirit.

This whole “grunge sexy” thing, at the end of the day, is just about feelin’ good about yourself. If puttin’ on some dark eyeshadow and bold lipstick makes you feel confident and powerful, then go for it, I say. Just don’t forget to be yourself, underneath all that makeup. That’s the most important thing, no matter what the fashion trends are.
