Diamond Tester on Lab Diamonds: Does It Work? Easy Explanation for Beginners!

by Griffith Maggie

Today I want to share something that’s been on my mind lately – lab diamonds. These things are getting more and more popular, and for good reason. They’re basically the same as those fancy diamonds that come out of the ground, but they’re made in a lab. That means no ethical concerns about mining, and they’re usually a bit cheaper too. But it also made me curious: do those diamond testers you see at jewelry stores actually work on lab diamonds?

So, I decided to find out for myself. I mean, I’m no expert, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it. First, I borrowed a diamond tester from a friend who’s a bit of a gem enthusiast. It’s a little pen-like device that’s supposed to measure how well a stone conducts heat.

Then came the hard part: finding some lab diamonds to test. I didn’t want to buy any, just in case this whole experiment was a bust. Luckily, I found a local jeweler who was willing to let me test a few of their lab-grown diamonds. It is a big deal for me.

I went down to the shop, feeling like a bit of a mad scientist. The jeweler was really cool about it, explaining how they knew their stones were lab-grown and letting me try out the tester. First, we tested some real, mined diamonds. Just as I thought, the tester beeped for all of them. It means they are real.

Then, we tried the lab diamonds. I held my breath as I touched the tester to the first stone… and it beeped! Just like the mined diamonds. I tried it on a few more, just to be sure, and they all passed the test. Turns out, lab diamonds conduct heat just like mined diamonds.

  • Experiment: Used a borrowed diamond tester pen on lab diamonds.
  • Findings: The tester beeped for all of them. Lab diamonds and mined diamonds conduct heat the same.

So, there you have it. Diamond testers do work on lab diamonds. It makes sense when you think about it. They’re made of the same stuff, just created in a different way. Of course, a simple diamond tester isn’t going to tell you everything about a stone. It can’t tell you if it is a well-made one or a poor one. But it’s a good first step in figuring out if you’re looking at a real diamond, whether it came from the earth or a lab. And I also know that moissanite, a man-made gem, may pass as a diamond on a standard tester pen. Because moissanite also has very high thermal conductivity! Other diamond simulants, such as CZ, will not pass the tester. But at least, I know that diamond testers can work on lab diamonds.

This little experiment of mine was a success. Now I have first-hand experience and can share with my readers. It is a relief and so exciting.
