So, the little one has been on my case, constantly. “Spiderman suitcase, Spiderman suitcase!” You know how kids get. I had a look around, checked online, even went to a couple of stores. The official ones? Man, they either looked like they were made of super flimsy plastic – you know, the kind that’d probably crack if you looked at it too hard – or they wanted an arm and a leg for it. Seriously, the prices were just nuts. No way I was paying that.

Then it sort of hit me. We had this old carry-on suitcase, just a plain black boring thing, sitting up in the attic collecting dust for ages. I figured, why not try and give it a Spidey makeover myself? Can’t be that difficult, can it? Yeah, famous last words, as always.
Getting Prepped and My Grand Artistic Failure
First job was to drag that old suitcase down from its dusty prison. Gave it a good wipe down. Seriously, it needed it. The amount of dust on that thing was crazy. Once it looked somewhat like a suitcase again, and not a furry creature, I laid out what I thought was my brilliant plan.
My first idea, you see, was to get all artsy. I thought, I’ll paint some cool web patterns, maybe a big Spiderman logo right on the front. So, I went out and got some red and blue acrylic paints. Well, let me tell you, I am no artist. Not even close. My attempts at spider webs looked more like a bunch of sad, squiggly worms. And the Spidey logo? Let’s just say it was very… interpretive. My kiddo took one look and, bless his honest little heart, just said, “Daddy, that doesn’t really look like Spiderman.” Ouch. Kids, eh? They don’t pull any punches.
Plan B: Bring on the Stickers!
Alright, so painting was a total flop. Clearly, my talents lie elsewhere. So, I moved onto the next best thing: stickers! And lots of ’em. I hopped online and ordered a whole bunch of Spiderman decals – you know, Spidey in different poses, various logos, some cool web-shooter effects, the works. Way easier than trying to wrestle with a paintbrush, and honestly, probably going to look a million times better than my tragic painting efforts.
From that point, the whole thing was pretty straightforward, but it still took a bit of time and patience:

- Cleaning Up My Mess (Again): First, I had to make sure the surface was super clean, especially where the stickers were going to go. I scrubbed off my failed paint job as best I could. Some of it was stubborn.
- Sticker Strategy: This turned into a bit of a team project. My little one was the official creative director, pointing and deciding where each sticker should go. “That big one there! No, a bit to the left!” It was actually pretty fun, messing about with it together.
- The Sticking Process: Getting some of the bigger stickers on without any annoying bubbles was a bit of a faff. I had to carefully peel and re-stick a few of them. I found that using an old bank card to smooth them out as I went really helped. Oh, and a little tip: if you’ve got a hairdryer, a tiny bit of heat on a low setting can make the vinyl stickers a bit more flexible, especially if you’re trying to get them around curved edges of the suitcase. Just don’t overdo it and melt the sticker or the suitcase!
- Sealing the Deal: Once we were both happy with our Spiderman sticker masterpiece, I took the suitcase outside. Gave it a couple of light coats of clear acrylic sealer spray. That stuff really stinks, so definitely do this in a well-ventilated spot, or even better, outdoors if you can. The idea was to give the stickers a bit of protection, stop them from peeling off too easily after a bit of use. Then came the hard part: waiting for it to dry completely. Felt like it took ages.
Checking the Wheels and Stuff
The suitcase was a roller, obviously, that’s the whole point. But the wheels were a bit stiff and creaky from just sitting around unused for so long. So, I gave them a quick clean, dug out any trapped hair and general gunk – pretty gross, I know, but it has to be done. Then I gave them a tiny squirt of WD-40, just a little bit. Spun them around a few times. They weren’t exactly like brand new, but definitely a lot smoother than before.
The Big Reveal and Final Thoughts
So, when everything was finally dry and ready, the look on my kid’s face? Absolutely priceless. Suddenly, I was the coolest dad in the world. The suitcase isn’t perfect, not by a long shot. If you look really closely, you can still faintly see some of my terrible paint attempts underneath in a few spots (note to self: if I ever try painting something dark again, use a decent primer first!). And I fully expect a sticker or two might start to peel at the edges after a few adventures. But honestly, who cares?
It’s unique, it’s covered in Spiderman, and most importantly, we made it. It was a decent little weekend project. Saved a bit of money, found a good use for an old thing that was just taking up space, and definitely scored some major dad points. Sometimes these DIY projects can be a real headache, you know? But this one actually turned out alright. Way better than those generic, mass-produced things you find in the shops, anyway. At least this one has a bit of character, a bit of soul, right?
