So, I’ve been getting really into diamonds lately, you know, the whole sparkle and shine thing. I found myself down a rabbit hole about the “largest blue diamond in the world” and, let me tell you, it was quite the journey. I started by just wanting to see some pretty pictures of this massive blue gem.

First, I fired up my computer and opened my trusty browser. Then I typed in “largest blue diamond in the world” into the search bar, hit enter, and bam! A ton of articles popped up. I started clicking through them, reading about all these different blue diamonds.
Initially, I was looking for the largest polished blue diamond. After a bit of digging, I stumbled upon this one called the “Oppenheimer Blue.” It was a whopping 14.62 carats. It was labeled the largest “Fancy Vivid Blue” diamond to ever be at an auction. I learned that it was sold at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva, and get this, it went for over 58 million dollars! Can you believe that? I mean, I knew these things were expensive, but that’s just insane.

But then I got curious. What about the largest uncut blue diamond? So I went back to searching. This time, things got a bit more vague. There isn’t a lot out there on uncut blue diamonds as large as the famous cut ones, but I did find out that the “De Beers Blue” is the largest vivid blue diamond to appear at auction. Also, I read that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) said it was the largest internally flawless step-cut vivid blue diamond they ever graded. Man, that’s a mouthful. It was sold for about 57.5 million dollars. I found out that it’s pretty impossible to know the exact size of the largest uncut blue diamond, but it is certainly bigger than all the cut ones.
The Biggest Diamond Ever!
But then I stumbled upon the granddaddy of them all – the Cullinan Diamond. Now, this one isn’t blue, but it’s the largest rough diamond ever found, period. We’re talking 3,106 carats! It was discovered in South Africa in 1905. This thing was so massive that they cut it into 105 different gems. I read that the Cullinan Diamond is worth around 400 million dollars. That’s a number that almost doesn’t seem real. Some people were saying the Oppenheimer Blue sold for close to a quarter of the price per carat as another famous blue diamond. Can you even wrap your head around those numbers?
So, yeah, that’s been my little adventure into the world of giant blue diamonds. It’s crazy to think about these massive, sparkly rocks that are worth more than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. I just wanted to see a big blue diamond, and I ended up learning about some of the most expensive and impressive gems in the world. Now I feel the need to go to a museum and see one of these beauties in person.
