Vanilla Havane: The Sweet Scent Youll Love

by Joyce Mackintosh

Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here perfume, this vanilla havane thing. I ain’t no fancy pants expert or nothin’, but I know what smells good, ya know? And this here stuff, it smells… interestin’.

Vanilla Havane: The Sweet Scent Youll Love

First whiff, it ain’t like them flowery things my granddaughter wears. This one’s got a kick to it. Smells kinda dark, like them fancy vanilla beans they use in bakin’. Not that sweet, sugary vanilla though. This one’s got somethin’ else goin’ on. They say it’s got rum in it. Rum! Can ya believe it? I ain’t never smelled rum in a perfume before. But it ain’t like gettin’ drunk or nothin’. It just gives it a little… oomph. Like a warm feelin’ in your nose.

They also talk about dried fruit. Now, I’ve dried my fair share of apples and peaches, and I can kinda see what they mean. There’s a sweetness, but it ain’t fresh and juicy. It’s like… concentrated sweetness, ya know? Like when you make them dried apple pies, all that flavor packed into one bite. That’s kinda how this perfume smells, but with a bit of somethin’ extra.

And cocoa! Lordy, I love me some cocoa. My kids used to drink that hot cocoa stuff all winter long. And this perfume, it’s got a hint of that chocolatey smell. Not like a candy bar, though. More like when you open a bag of cocoa powder, that kinda dry, dusty, chocolate smell. It’s subtle, not like it’s gonna hit ya over the head with chocolate. But it’s there, makin’ things a little more… I dunno… cozy, I guess.

  • Now, some folks say it smells like “oud”. I ain’t got no idea what that is. Sounds fancy. But if I had to guess, I’d say it’s that smoky smell. Like when you burn wood in the fireplace, that kinda earthy, warm smell. It’s in the background, not strong or nothin’, but it’s there, makin’ things smell… deeper, I reckon.
  • And then there’s the spices. Warm spices, they say. Makes me think of cinnamon and cloves, like what you put in them pumpkin pies. Not a lot, just a pinch, ya know? Just enough to give it a little bit of… zing. To make it interestin’. Keeps it from bein’ just plain vanilla.
  • Leather, too! Can ya believe it? Leather! I’ve smelled my share of leather, workin’ on the farm and all. And this ain’t like no fresh leather smell. It’s more like… old leather. Like a worn-out saddle or somethin’. It ain’t a bad smell, though. It just adds another layer, makes it smell… rich, maybe? Like somethin’ that’s been around for a while, somethin’ that’s got a story to tell.

Some folks say it’s like a “sweet tobacco” perfume. I ain’t never smoked no tobacco, but I guess I can see what they mean. It’s got that kinda… sweetness, but it ain’t flowery or fruity. It’s somethin’ else. Like a dark sweetness. And it ain’t overly sweet, neither. It’s just… right. Like Goldilocks and her porridge, ya know?

Now, they call this here perfume Vanille Havane, but to be honest, the vanilla ain’t the whole story. It’s there, alright, but it’s mixed with all these other smells, all these other things. It’s like a good stew, ya know? You got the meat, the potatoes, the carrots, all simmerin’ together, makin’ somethin’ better than just the sum of its parts. That’s what this perfume is like. It ain’t just vanilla. It’s vanilla… plus.

And the chocolate! I nearly forgot about that chocolate. When you first smell it, you’d think they got the name wrong. It smells so much like chocolate right off the bat, makes ya wonder where the vanilla is. But it’s there, hidin’ underneath. It’s like a surprise, ya know? Like findin’ a twenty dollar bill in your coat pocket. Makes ya happy.

So, would I wear this vanilla havane? Well, I reckon I might. It ain’t for everyday, mind you. It’s for when you wanna feel a little… fancy. A little… mysterious. A little… like you got a secret. It ain’t a perfume for little girls. It’s a grown-up perfume, for a grown-up woman. A woman who knows what she wants and ain’t afraid to go get it. A woman like me, I guess. Even though I’m just a plain ol’ country gal.

Anyway, that’s what I think of this here perfume. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know what I like. And I like this. It’s interestin’. It’s different. It’s got somethin’ to it. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
