Unpacking the Nancy Reagan Wednesday Phenomenon

by Griffith Maggie

Alright, alright, let’s talk about this… uh… Nancy Reagan Wednesday thing. I ain’t no fancy writer, so don’t expect no big words or nothin’. Just gonna tell it like it is, you know?

Unpacking the Nancy Reagan Wednesday Phenomenon

So, this Wednesday girl, she’s in some school called Nancy Reagan High School. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? Nancy Reagan, huh? I reckon she was a big shot, some kinda president’s wife or somethin’. Anyway, this school, it looks all shiny and new in the pictures. Kids everywhere, just like them city schools always are. Too many kids, if you ask me.

Now, Wednesday, she’s a bit of a strange one. Not like them other giggly girls you see. She’s all dark and gloomy, walks around like she owns the place. And she’s got this… this way about her. Like she knows somethin’ you don’t. I seen pictures, she’s got these braids, looks kinda like them dolls my grandaughter plays with, but way creepier.

  • She don’t fit in, that’s for sure.
  • All them other kids, they’re all smiles and gossip.
  • Wednesday, she just stares right through ’em.

They showed her walkin’ in the school, real calm like. Big hallways, bright lights… it’s all too fancy for my taste. They even got a statue of that Nancy Reagan woman, right there in the school. Can you believe it? A statue! What for, I don’t know. Seems like a waste of money if you ask me. Coulda bought a lot of good food with the money they spent on that thing.

This whole thing, it’s like a show or somethin’. They got trailers and pictures and all that. Like them movies they show at the picture house downtown. I don’t go much, too loud and the seats are uncomfortable, makes my old bones ache. But I seen enough to know what’s what. They make a big fuss about everything these days.

From what I gather, Wednesday, she don’t stay at that Nancy Reagan school for long. Guess she didn’t like it much. Can’t say I blame her. Probably too many rules and not enough common sense. Kids these days, they need a good dose of hard work and less of this fancy book learnin’. That’s what I always say.

They talk about Wednesday bein’ glamorous and stylish, but I don’t see it. She looks like trouble to me. All that black clothes and that pale face… reminds me of that old crow that used to sit on the fence post out back. Always watchin’, always judgin’. That’s Wednesday, alright.

Now, that Nancy Reagan lady, she was all about helpin’ people, they say. Veterans, old folks, the disabled… she worked with charities and all that. Good for her, I guess. But this Wednesday girl, I don’t see her doin’ no charity work. She’s probably too busy plottin’ somethin’ or other. Kids these days, always up to somethin’.

There was somethin’ about a swimmin’ pool too. Dinamo somethin’ or other. Don’t know what that got to do with anything, but they mentioned it. Maybe Wednesday goes for a swim? Can’t picture her in a swimsuit, though. She’d probably scare all the other swimmers away.

Anyway, this whole Nancy Reagan Wednesday thing… it’s just a bunch of hooey if you ask me. But folks seem to like it, so who am I to judge? They make shows about everything these days. Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s bad. I don’t know. I just hope them kids learn somethin’ useful at that fancy school, even if it is named after a president’s wife.

Wednesday Addams, that’s her whole name, I heard someone say. Sounds like a mouthful too, just like that school name. She’s one of them Addams family, I reckon. Always been a bit odd, that family. But they stick together, and that’s more than you can say for some folks these days.

So, that’s my take on it. Not much, I know. But it’s the truth, as best as I can tell. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. Got a pot of beans on the stove that needs watchin’. Beans are good for you, you know. Keeps you strong and healthy. More than you can say for all that fancy city food.
