Tommy Hilfiger Logo TH: What Does It Stand For and Why Is It So Popular?

by Griffith Maggie

So, today I tried to mess around with the Tommy Hilfiger logo, you know, the one with the letters “TH”. I thought it would be a fun little project to see how the logo evolved and maybe learn a thing or two about design.

First, I started digging around to find some background on this logo. Turns out, it’s pretty iconic! I found that the whole red and white rectangle thing actually has a meaning. It’s a maritime flag that represents the letter “H”, which makes sense since it’s the first letter of “Hilfiger”. Who knew, right? The nautical theme is apparently a big inspiration for Tommy Hilfiger, which is kind of cool.

Then I tried to recreate the logo myself. It seemed simple enough at first glance, just two letters and a few rectangles. But getting the proportions and spacing just right was trickier than I expected. I used a basic design tool and started with a white rectangle. Then I added a red one next to it, making sure they were the same height. The “TH” part was next.

  • Drawing the “T”: I made a vertical line and then a horizontal one across the top. I played around with the thickness to match the original.
  • Making the “H”: Two vertical lines with a shorter horizontal one connecting them in the middle. This one was easier, but aligning it perfectly with the “T” took some adjusting.

I spent a good chunk of time tweaking the spacing between the letters and the rectangles. I wanted it to look as close to the real logo as possible. I even tried a few different fonts to see which one matched the best, but eventually, I realized the original logo probably uses a custom-designed font.

After a lot of trial and error, I finally had something that looked pretty decent. It wasn’t perfect, but it definitely captured the essence of the Tommy Hilfiger “TH” logo. This little exercise taught me that even seemingly simple logos have a lot of thought and detail put into them. Plus, I learned a cool fact about maritime flags!

It also got me thinking about how the brand evolved. I learned they worked with big stars like Britney Spears and The Rolling Stones, and even had fragrance campaigns with Beyonc and Enrique Iglesias, and fashion campaigns with David Bowie and Iman! They even have this crest with a lion, sword, and laurels, which was created way back in 1985. Apparently, the founder wanted a “family crest” for the brand, which is a neat idea.

All in all, it was a fun way to spend an afternoon, messing around with a famous logo and learning some random facts along the way. It definitely made me appreciate the work that goes into branding and design a bit more.
