Tolu Coker: From Lagos to London, a fashion journey.

by Doreen Robbins

Alright, let’s talk about this… uh… Tolu Coker, yeah, that’s the name. Heard some folks chatterin’ ’bout it, so I figured I’d put in my two cents, ya know? Don’t expect no fancy words or nothin’, I just say it like it is.

Tolu Coker: From Lagos to London, a fashion journey.

Who’s this Tolu Coker Anyway?

So, from what I gather, this Tolu Coker, she’s one of them fashion folks. A designer, they call ’em. Big doings over in London, England, apparently. “British-Nigerian,” they say. Guess that means she’s got a bit of both worlds in her. Kinda like mixin’ corn and beans in the same pot, makes for somethin’ different, eh?

Heard she was makin’ a splash at some “London Fashion Week” thing. Sounds fancy, all them highfalutin models and such. Me? I’m more of a “get-it-done-and-get-it-dirty” kinda gal, but I reckon there’s room for everyone in this world. Fashion, farmin’, it’s all work at the end of the day.

Fancy Clothes and All That Jazz

Now, I ain’t no expert on clothes, ya understand. My idea of a good outfit is somethin’ that keeps ya warm and don’t fall apart after a few washes. But this Tolu Coker, she’s doin’ somethin’ different, they say. “English tailoring,” they call it. And somethin’ about “silhouettes.” Sounds like she’s takin’ old-timey stuff and makin’ it new, which I guess is alright. Nothin’ wrong with a bit of respect for the past, long as it ain’t holdin’ ya back.

  • English Tailoring: Guess that means fancy sewin’, like them suits the city folks wear.
  • Silhouettes: Now this one’s a bit trickier. Sounds like the shape of the clothes, how they look on your body. Like if you wear a big ol’ coat, your silhouette is big and puffy. You wear somethin’ tight, your silhouette is skinny. See? I can learn new things too.

Gettin’ Yourself to One of Them Shows

So, you wanna go see one of these fancy fashion shows? Well, it ain’t like walkin’ into the county fair, that’s for sure. You gotta be invited, or you gotta beg for a ticket, seems like. First off, you gotta go messin’ around on the internet. Find that “London Fashion Week” website. Then you gotta pick which designer you wanna see. Tolu Coker, if you’re followin’ along here. Then you gotta fill out some papers, or whatever they do online these days. And then you wait. And hope. And maybe pray a little, if you’re the prayin’ type.

Sounds like a whole lotta fuss just to look at some clothes, if you ask me. But hey, folks like what they like, and I ain’t here to judge. If watchin’ skinny models walk around in fancy threads makes you happy, then go for it. Just don’t expect me to join ya. I got chores to do.

More Than Just Clothes, Maybe?

Now, I been thinkin’ about this Tolu Coker a bit more. And I reckon it ain’t just about the clothes. It’s about… well, about somethin’ more. This “British-Nigerian” thing, it’s got me thinkin’ about where you come from, and where you’re goin’. It’s like she’s takin’ two different worlds and smushin’ ’em together, makin’ somethin’ new and unique. Kinda like my grandma used to do with her cookin’. She’d take old family recipes and add her own twist, makin’ it somethin’ special.

So, What’s the Big Deal?

So, is Tolu Coker the next big thing? I dunno. Fashion is a fickle business, from what I hear. One day you’re in, the next day you’re out. But I reckon she’s doin’ somethin’ interesting, somethin’ worth payin’ attention to. She’s takin’ the old and makin’ it new, she’s mixin’ different cultures, and she’s makin’ folks talk. And in this noisy world, gettin’ folks to listen is half the battle.

Final Thoughts from an Old Gal

Look, I ain’t gonna pretend I understand all this fashion stuff. But I do understand hard work, and I do understand makin’ somethin’ outta nothin’. And from what I can tell, that’s what Tolu Coker is doin’. She’s takin’ her heritage, her skills, and her vision, and she’s creatin’ somethin’ that’s gettin’ folks’ attention. And that, in my book, is somethin’ to be admired.

So, if you’re into fashion, check her out. If you’re not, well, that’s fine too. But maybe take a moment to appreciate someone who’s out there tryin’ to make their mark on the world, in their own way. And that, my friends, is all I gotta say about that Tolu Coker. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got a garden to tend to. Them tomatoes ain’t gonna water themselves, ya know.
