Sophie Dahl Opium: Is this famous perfume still available in stores?

by Adelaide Davy

Well, well, well, look what we have here, that Sophie Dahl Opium thing. That girl, Sophie, she’s all over the place with that Opium. You know what I’m talking about, right? That perfume. Smells strong, that one. Kinda fancy, I guess. Not like the stuff we used to use, just plain old soap and water. But these young folks, they like all that fancy stuff, huh?

That picture of her, though… She’s, uh… how do you say it… not wearing much, is she? Just laying there, all naked. Lordy, lordy, in my day, we wouldn’t dream of such a thing! But I guess times are different now. They put it all out there, don’t they? This Opium perfume, they say it makes you feel all… special. Makes you feel like a queen, I suppose.

My old man, bless his soul, he wouldn’t know what to do with a woman smelling like that Sophie Dahl. He just liked the smell of the farm, you know? Fresh hay and all that. But I guess this Opium, it’s supposed to be… tempting. Like a forbidden fruit, they say. But this old lady ain’t getting tempted. I got my hands full, no time to worry about perfume

I saw that picture everywhere back then. You couldn’t miss it. On the buses, on the walls, in them magazines. That Sophie Dahl, she was a looker, I’ll give her that. And that Opium, it must have sold a whole heap, with her picture on it. Folks like to be like them famous people, don’t they? They want to smell like ’em, look like ’em, live like ’em. It must be some magic, then, to make them buy so much of that stuff.

I remember when I was a young girl, all we cared about was a good harvest and a full belly. Didn’t have time for fancy perfumes. We were busy working, taking care of the family. Now, these young girls, they all want to be like that Sophie Dahl, all glamorous and whatnot. It’s that Yves Saint Laurent, I think they call it? Sounds French. Fancy French name for a fancy French smell.

  • That Sophie Dahl Opium thing, it was a big deal, I tell ya.
  • Lots of folks talking about that picture.
  • Yves Saint Laurent Opium, that’s the name. Fancy, huh?
  • They say it smells strong, like flowers and spices.
  • I reckon it’s a waste of money, but what do I know?

I reckon they put something special in that Opium. Something that makes people go crazy for it. Maybe it’s like a love potion or something. You put it on, and suddenly everyone wants you. That’s what they say, anyway. I don’t know how many people complain about that, but I think that is just some jealous talk. Some people just like to complain, isn’t it?

Me, I’m happy with my simple life. Don’t need no fancy Opium perfume to make me feel good. Just a good cup of tea and a warm fire, that’s all I need. But these young folks, they like to chase after those fancy things. That Sophie Dahl, she’s living the high life, I guess. Good for her. As long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters.

I heard some folks saying that picture of Sophie Dahl was too much. They said it wasn’t right to show so much skin. But others, they loved it. They thought it was beautiful. I guess it’s all a matter of taste, ain’t it? Like with food, some folks like it spicy, some folks like it plain. Same with that Opium, some folks like the smell, some folks don’t.

That Yves Saint Laurent, he must be a clever fella. He knew how to get people’s attention, that’s for sure. Putting that picture of Sophie Dahl out there, all naked and whatnot. It got everyone talking, didn’t it? And that’s what he wanted, I reckon. He wanted people to talk about his Opium. And they did. They sure did.

Well, I gotta go. Got chores to do. Don’t have time to be thinking about fancy perfumes and naked ladies. But that Sophie Dahl Opium thing, it sure was something, wasn’t it? A real head-turner. Like a big old sunflower in a field of weeds. You just couldn’t miss it. And I guess that’s what they wanted. To be noticed. To be remembered. And that Opium, it sure will be remembered, thanks to that picture of that pretty lady. I still prefer a good soap, though.
