SketchUp Scan to Design: From Real World to 3D Model

by Meredith Sassoon

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this thing called “sketchup scan to design” and I gotta say, it’s pretty wild. Basically, you can use your phone to scan a room or an object, and then SketchUp turns it into a 3D model. Sounds like magic, right? Well, let me tell you how it went down for me.

SketchUp Scan to Design: From Real World to 3D Model

First, I got this app on my phone. It’s called “Scan-to-Design” – pretty straightforward. Then, I picked a room in my house. I wanted to scan it first. I fired up the app and started waving my phone around like a crazy person, trying to capture every nook and cranny. The app guides you through it, so it’s not too hard. You just gotta make sure you get all the angles and don’t miss any spots.

Once I was done scanning, the app did its thing for a while. I guess it was processing all that data or whatever. I didn’t have to do anything, just let the phone do it’s work. Finally, it showed me a preview of the 3D model. It looked a bit rough around the edges, but hey, it was definitely my room. It was rough but I can recognize it’s my room.

Then, this is where the “design” part comes in. I sent the scan to my SketchUp on my computer – that’s the software I use for 3D modeling. This whole “Scan Essentials” and “SketchUp Studio” thing helps bring that scan data into my project. I’m not gonna lie, it took some time to figure out how to use all the tools and stuff, and at one point I was like “how do I do this?”.

But once I got the hang of it, it was pretty cool. I could move around the 3D model of my room, add furniture, change the wall colors, and just basically play around with the design. There’s this “point cloud” thing that lets you draw directly on your scan using SketchUp’s tools. You can even “lock onto a single plane” which made modeling way easier.

  • First, you scan your room with the app.
  • Then, the app makes a 3D model.
  • You send the model to SketchUp on your computer.
  • Then you can use SketchUp’s tools to design and change stuff.

I mean, it’s not perfect. Sometimes the scans can be a bit wonky, and you gotta do some cleaning up in SketchUp. But it’s way faster than starting from scratch. I was amazed that I can do this with just my phone and a computer.

Overall, I think this “sketchup scan to design” thing is a game-changer, especially for someone like me who’s into home design and stuff. It’s like having a superpower, being able to turn real-world spaces into 3D models with just your phone. I’m definitely gonna keep using it. It’s a lot of fun and saves me a ton of time.
