Sapphire Crystal: The Ultimate Guide to Watch Crystals.

by Marvin Connie

Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “sapphire crystal” things popping up everywhere, especially on fancy watches. I got curious, so I did a little digging and decided to see what all the fuss was about. I mean, is it REALLY that much better than regular glass?

My Little Experiment

First, I grabbed an old watch I had lying around – the kind with a regular mineral glass face. Then, I ordered a small piece of sapphire crystal online. It wasn’t cheap, I gotta say!

When the sapphire arrived, I got my tools ready. This was going to be interesting. I carefully removed the old mineral glass from the watch. Let me tell you, that was a bit nerve-wracking! I didn’t want to break anything.

Next, I carefully tried to fit the sapphire crystal into the watch bezel. This part was tricky. It’s much harder than the mineral glass, so it requires * serval times, I did it.

The Scratch Test

Now for the fun part – the scratch test! I took a key and gently (at first) rubbed it across the old mineral glass. Yep, scratches appeared pretty easily. Then, I did the same thing to the sapphire crystal. Nothing! I pressed a little harder… still nothing! I was pretty impressed.

I even tried a sharper object, a small screwdriver I use the screwdriver and scratched it a little bit harder on the sapphire crystal. It get nothing, too!

The Results

So, after all that, what did I learn? Sapphire crystal is TOUGH. Like, really tough. It’s definitely way more scratch-resistant than regular mineral glass. Now I understand why it’s used on high-end watches and stuff.

Would I recommend it? If you’re clumsy like me and tend to bang your watches around, then yeah, it might be worth the investment. Just be prepared to get your hands a little dirty if you’re planning on doing the swap yourself!
