Phase 1: The “OMG, I Need a Change” Moment
It all started after binge-watching “Broad City” for the millionth time. I was like, “Damn, Ilana’s got energy for days! And she looks…comfortable.” Not “model skinny,” but strong and real. I was tired of feeling sluggish and hating every photo of myself. So, I decided to do something about it.
First thing I did was ditch the junk. Seriously, I cleaned out my pantry. No more processed crap, sugary drinks, or endless bags of chips. That was tough, I ain’t gonna lie.
Phase 2: Sweating My Ass Off (Literally)
I knew diet alone wouldn’t cut it. I needed to move my body. I’m not a gym person, so I tried a bunch of stuff.

- Yoga: Tried it, hated it. Too slow for my taste. I need something with more oomph.
- Running: Lasted about a week. My knees screamed bloody murder.
- Dance Classes: This was more like it! Found a hip-hop class that was a blast. Still sucked at it, but at least I was laughing while sweating.
- Walking: Started walking everywhere. To the store, to meet friends, even to places that were a little further than I’d normally go.
Ended up sticking with the dance classes and the walking. It was fun and sustainable. Key word: sustainable.
Phase 3: Fueling the Machine (aka, Eating Right)
Remember that pantry clean-out? Well, now I had to fill it with something. I started focusing on whole foods. Lots of fruits, veggies, lean protein, and whole grains.
- Breakfast: Oatmeal with berries and nuts.
- Lunch: Big salad with grilled chicken or fish.
- Dinner: Veggie stir-fry or baked chicken with roasted veggies.
I also started paying attention to my portions. No more mindless snacking in front of the TV. I made sure to drink plenty of water too. Staying hydrated is a game changer.
Phase 4: The Mental Game

This was the hardest part. It’s easy to get discouraged when you don’t see results right away. I had to learn to be patient and focus on how I felt, not just how I looked.
I started practicing self-compassion. If I slipped up and ate a piece of cake, I didn’t beat myself up about it. I just moved on and made a better choice next time.
I also unfollowed a bunch of people on social media who made me feel bad about myself. No more comparing myself to unrealistic standards.
Phase 5: The “I Think I’m Getting There” Moment
It’s been about six months since I started this journey. I’m not exactly “ilana glazer body” material yet, but I’m getting there. I feel stronger, more energetic, and more confident. I’ve lost some weight, but that’s just a bonus. The real victory is that I’m finally taking care of myself, both physically and mentally.
