Dutch Vogue Style: How to Get the Look (Easy Tips to Look Like a Cover Model)

by Cornell Yule

Today, I messed around with this thing called “Dutch Vogue.” I’d seen some pretty awesome photos from it before, so I wanted to give it a shot myself.

First, I grabbed my camera and started looking for a good spot. I wanted somewhere with decent lighting, but not, like, super bright sunlight. I ended up in my living room, near the window. It’s got this nice, soft light that I figured would work pretty well.

Setting the Scene

Next, I had to set up the background. I didn’t have any fancy backdrops, so I just used a dark blanket. I hung it up behind where I was gonna sit, making sure it was smooth and all. Then, I played around with some props. I found this old chair and a few books that I thought would look cool in the shots.

  • Found a dark blanket for the backdrop.
  • Used an old chair and some books as props.
  • Made sure the background was smooth.

Getting the Lighting Right

Lighting was the trickiest part. I moved the chair around a bit, trying to get that classic Dutch Master look—you know, with the light hitting one side of the face and all that. I took a bunch of test shots, adjusting the camera settings each time. It took a while, but I finally got something I was happy with.

Posing and Shooting

Then came the actual photoshoot. I tried out a few different poses, some serious, some a bit more relaxed. I used the self-timer on my camera so I could get in the shots myself. It was kinda awkward at first, running back and forth, but I got the hang of it after a few tries.

  • Tried different poses.
  • Used the camera’s self-timer.
  • Adjusted poses based on test shots.

Editing the Photos

After I took all the photos, I uploaded them to my computer. I used this photo editing software I have to tweak them a bit. I played around with the contrast and brightness, trying to get that moody, painterly vibe. I didn’t want to overdo it, just enhance the natural light and shadows.

  • Uploaded photos to the computer.
  • Used photo editing software to adjust.
  • Focused on contrast and brightness.

All in all, it was a fun little project. The photos turned out pretty good, I think. It’s definitely something I’d try again, maybe with different props or lighting setups. It’s cool to see how you can create something artistic with just a few simple things.

I am really happy that the final results are pretty good. I think I should do this kind of cool things more often.
