Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Easter thing, the Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival, you know? It’s a big to-do, they say. Folks get all gussied up, wearin’ their finest clothes, like they ain’t never worn nothin’ nice before.
Now, I heard tell this all started way back when, like in the 1800s or somethin’. People, mostly women I reckon, they’d get themselves a new bonnet, that’s a fancy hat, ya see? Or they’d take their old one and stick all sorts of stuff on it, ribbons and flowers and such, all for this Easter parade.
- First off, they say it all began in New York City.
- People would go to church on Easter, all dressed up in their new spring clothes.
- Then, I guess, folks started comin’ just to see the clothes and the hats, and it turned into a whole big thing.
They say Fifth Avenue in New York, that’s where the biggest parade is. But I hear they do it in other places too. It wasn’t no planned thing at first, just folks showin’ off, but it got real popular, specially ‘round the middle of the last century, like in the 1940s or so. Imagine that, a whole bunch of people just walkin’ around in fancy hats!
This year, 2024, they had it on March 31st. Starts at 10 in the mornin’ and goes on ‘til about 4 in the afternoon. Plenty of time to see all them bonnets, I guess. If you wanna see it real good, they say you gotta go to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, that’s on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets. That’s what I heard, anyway.
Now, you might be askin’, “How do you get in this parade?” Well, it ain’t like no ticket thing. Anybody can go, long as you got a bonnet. And the fancier the better, they say. Them city folks, they like things big and showy, I tell ya. Whimsical, that’s the word they use. Means somethin’ fancy and kinda silly, I think.
So, every year, they all gather up on Fifth Avenue, from 49th Street all the way up to 57th Street. Just struttin’ their stuff, showin’ off them bonnets. It’s a whole celebration, they say, a way to welcome spring. And it ain’t just the hats, it’s the whole outfit. Spring gear, they call it. Makes sense, I guess, Easter bein’ in the spring and all.
They had another one last year too, in 2023. April 9th, that was. Started at 10 a.m., just like this year. Seems like they do it the same every year, which is good, I suppose. Folks like things they can count on.
So, that’s the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival, as best as I can tell ya. A bunch of people, fancy hats, and a whole lotta fuss. But hey, if it makes ‘em happy, who am I to judge? It’s somethin’ to see, I reckon, all them colors and bows and whatnot. Makes for a nice day out, I guess, if you’re into that kinda thing.
Easter Parade, Easter Bonnet Festival, Fifth Avenue, New York City, bonnets, spring clothes, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, these are all important words to remember, seems like. That’s what the young folks tell me, anyhow. They say it helps people find things on that there internet thingamajig.
Anyways, that’s all I know ’bout it. Hope it makes some sense to ya. It’s a city thing, I guess, but even us country folk can appreciate a bit of silliness now and then, right? And a pretty hat never hurt nobody, I always say. Just makes sure it fits good and don’t blow off in the wind, that’s what I say!
