by Alice Browne

Well, let me tell you, that Cyndi Lauper, she was somethin’ else back in the 80s. That gal, she sure knew how to shake things up! Her music was just everywher, all the time.

Cyndi Lauper 80’s Music

I remember it like it was yesterday. Everybody was listenin’ to her songs. You couldn’t escape it! The radio, the store, even in that place where they fix up cars!

  • Girls Just Want to Have Fun – Lord, that song. Every time it came on, you just had to get up and dance. Made ya feel young again, even if you weren’t that young anymore.
  • Time After Time – A bit slower, this one. Made ya think of that boy you liked back in school. Maybe shed a tear or two, if you were feelin’ sentimental.
  • She Bop – Now this one, this one was a little naughty, if you catch my drift. But catchy! Oh, so catchy!

Cyndi Lauper 80’s Style

And her clothes? Goodness gracious! All them colors and patterns, mixed and matched like she just grabbed whatever was closest. It was wild, it was crazy, it was… well, it was Cyndi! Never seen nothin’ like it before, and haven’t seen nothin’ like it since. She was one of a kind.

Back then, every girl wanted to be like Cyndi. They’d try to copy her 80’s style. Lots of bright neon colors, you know? Lots of pinks and greens and yellows. And the hair! Oh, the hair! Big and wild, sometimes two or three different colors at once. It was a sight to see, I tell ya.

That Cyndi Lauper, she was just full of surprises. You never knew what she was gonna do next, what she was gonna wear, what she was gonna sing. And her voice! You could hear that voice a mile away. Loud and strong and just… different. Some folks didn’t like it, said it was too much. But I liked it. It was fun. And that’s what music’s supposed to be, right? Fun.

She was a big star, that Cyndi. Bigger than a hot summer day, I tell ya. And her music, her style… it was all part of the 80s, you see? Like, if you could take a picture of them olden days, that picture is Cyndi. Can’t think of the 80s without thinkin’ of her.

Cyndi Lauper’s Voice and Songs

Now, she did hurt her voice once. Some doctor said she wouldn’t ever sing again. Can you imagine? But she showed them! Got herself a voice teacher, and she was back at it. Stronger than ever, too. That Cyndi, she was a fighter.

Her and that Madonna girl, they both came out around the same time. Both big stars. But different. Madonna, she was more… polished, I guess you’d say. Cyndi, she was more… raw. More real. More like one of us, even though she was a big star.

And that song, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun“, that was like, her big song. Her special song. Everybody knew it. Everybody loved it. Still do, I reckon. If you hear it now, you can’t help but tap your foot. Maybe even get up and dance a little, if nobody’s lookin’.

Cyndi Lauper 80’s Fashion

The 80’s fashion, that was sure somethin’ to be remembered. And when you think of 80’s fashion, you think of Cyndi. Bright colors, loud patterns, things that didn’t match but somehow looked good together. Like she just threw on whatever she felt like wearin’ that day, and it just worked. Lots of jewelry, too. Big earrings, bracelets, necklaces. The whole shebang.

  • Bright Colors – Lots of pinks, yellows, greens, blues. Like a rainbow threw up on her, but in a good way.
  • Crazy Patterns – Stripes, polka dots, flowers, you name it. All mixed together like a big ol’ stew.
  • Lots of Layers – She’d wear a shirt, then a vest, then a jacket, then another shirt. Never knew what you were gonna get with Cyndi.

She was a trendsetter, that Cyndi. Started all sorts of new things. Things that other folks copied. But nobody could do it like her. She was the original. The one and only.

Yep, that Cyndi Lauper, she was somethin’ special. A real firecracker. And her music, her style, it’s all a part of her, a part of the 80s. She was the 80s. You can’t think of one without thinkin’ of the other. And that’s just the way it is, I reckon.
