Christmas Purses Gift Guide: Best Picks for Her!

by Marvin Connie

Okay, so I saw these super cute Christmas purses all over Pinterest and I just had to try making one myself. I’m not a pro sewer or anything, but I figured, how hard could it be? Turns out, it’s a bit more involved than I thought, but still totally doable!

Getting Started

First, I gathered my materials. I picked out some festive red and green felt because, duh, Christmas colors! I also grabbed some white felt for a Santa-ish trim, and some black felt for a belt. You’ll also need:

  • Scissors (the sharper, the better)
  • Needle and thread (red, green, white, and black)
  • Some kind of closure – I opted for a simple button and a loop of felt.
  • Stuffing (optional, but it makes the purse look plumper)

The Actual Sewing

I am not familiar with professional term, so I drew the shape I wanted directly onto the felt and cut out two identical pieces for the front and back of the purse. I made it a sort of rounded rectangle shape, but you could get creative here!

Then, I cut out a long strip of green felt for the sides and bottom of the purse. This part was tricky – I had to pin it all together first to make sure it would fit right. It took a few tries, to be honest.

Next, I started sewing. I just used a basic stitch, nothing fancy. I sewed the side/bottom strip to one of the main pieces, then sewed the other main piece on top. Make sure you leave the top open, though! That’s where your stuff goes.

I flipped the whole thing inside out so the seams were hidden, and that’s when it started to actually look like a purse!

Adding the Details

I cut out a strip of white felt and sewed it along the top edge for that fluffy Santa look. Then, I cut out a thin strip of black felt and sewed it around the middle for a belt. I even cut out a little square buckle from yellow felt and sewed that on, too.

For the closure, I just sewed a button on one side and made a small loop of felt on the other. Super simple.

I put a little bit stuffing inside to make my purse plump.

The Final Result!

It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of my little Christmas purse! It’s definitely got that handmade charm, and it’s the perfect size for carrying some candy canes or small gifts. I might even make a few more as presents. If I can do it, you totally can, too!
