Cartier Retro Watch: Where to Find and What to Pay

by Joyce Mackintosh

Okay, so I’ve been on this kick lately, totally obsessed with vintage watches. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something so cool about the history and the craftsmanship. I decided to dive deep into Cartier’s retro offerings, and boy, was that a rabbit hole!

Cartier Retro Watch: Where to Find and What to Pay

I started my quest by looking at pictures online – you know, just getting a feel for the different styles. I quickly realized there are TONS of variations, even within the same model. Tank, Santos, Pasha… It was a bit overwhelming.

My first real step was deciding on a specific model. I’ve always loved the classic look of the Tank, but I also wanted something a little…different. I eventually landed on a vintage Santos Dumont – that square case with the exposed screws, it just spoke to me.

Then came the hard part: actually finding one! I spent hours browsing online forums, reading old blog posts (some were super helpful!), and, scouring many famous watch trading * was like a treasure hunt, except instead of gold, I was searching for tiny screws and perfect dials.

  • Checked the serial numbers. Seriously, this is HUGE. You gotta make sure the watch is authentic and hasn’t been messed with. There are websites and even books that help you decode the numbers.
  • Examined the dial. I was looking for any signs of damage, discoloration, or – worst of all – redone dials. Original is key!
  • Inspected the case. Scratches are okay (it’s vintage!), but I wanted to avoid anything with major dents or signs of over-polishing.
  • Ask so many question about service history.

After a lot of searching, I finally found “the one.” It was a beautiful Santos Dumont from the 1970s, with a slightly aged dial that just added to its character. The seller was a collector, super knowledgeable, and answered all my (many) questions. We agreed on a price, and I anxiously awaited its arrival.

The Big Moment

When the package finally arrived, it was like Christmas morning. I carefully unboxed it, and there it was – my vintage Cartier. I strapped it on my wrist, and it felt…perfect. It’s a bit smaller than modern watches, but that’s part of the charm. It’s understated, elegant, and tells a story.I finally got it!

I’ve been wearing it almost every day since. It’s a conversation starter, and it just makes me happy to look down at my * whole experience has taught me so much about watches, and it’s definitely fueled my vintage obsession. Now, I’m already thinking about what to hunt for next…
