Well, let’s gab a bit about them folks with the curly hair, you know, the ones with the springy, twisty locks. Seems like a lot of fuss over it these days, but what do I know? I’m just an old woman spitting out what I see.

First off, what’s all this talk about “curl type”? Sounds fancy, but back in my day, hair was just hair – either it curled or it didn’t. But I guess if you wanna get all technical about it, some curls are tight little springs, some are big loopy waves, and some are just kinda…wavy-ish. Knowing your curl type, they say, helps you figure out how to take care of it. More power to ya, I say.
- Tight curls: Like little springs, all wound up tight.
- Loose curls: More like waves, flowy and such.
- Wavy hair: Not quite curls, not quite straight, just kinda in between.
Now, some folks complain about their curly hair being a mess, all frizzy and whatnot. They call it “frizz,” like it’s some kinda disease. But shoot, back in my day, we just called it “having a bad hair day.” But these young folks, they got all sorts of products and tricks to fight the frizz. They say you gotta “make peace with frizz,” whatever that means. Sounds like a load of hooey to me, but hey, if it makes ’em happy.
And talk about routines! Lord have mercy, the things these young’uns do to their hair. “Curly hair routine” this and “minimalist approach” that. Back in my day, you washed it, maybe put a little somethin’ in it if you were feeling fancy, and that was that. But now they got creams and gels and sprays and who knows what else. They say you don’t gotta spend a fortune or hours in the bathroom to have nice curls, but I’ve seen some bathrooms that look like a dang beauty supply store exploded in ’em.
They go on and on about “embracing your natural hair.” Well, I never knew there was any other kind of hair to have! It’s like saying you gotta embrace your nose or your toes. But I guess what they mean is, you gotta learn to love what you got and not try to be somebody else. And that, I can agree with. You don’t need to go changing your hair to please other folks. Just like you don’t put on deodorant for other folks, or paint your nails for ’em, or any of that other stuff.
Curly hair, they say, has more “volume” and “texture” than straight hair. Well, duh! It sticks out all over the place, of course it’s got volume. And texture? I guess that just means it ain’t flat and boring. Some folks think it looks “youthful” and “energetic.” Maybe so, maybe so. I’ve seen plenty of old folks with curly hair, too, so I don’t know about all that. And they say it “symbolizes freedom” and a “carefree attitude.” Well, I reckon that depends on the person, not just the hair.

And the styles! Goodness gracious, the different ways they wear their curly hair. Upside down, sideways, braids, twists, knots…it’s enough to make your head spin. Seems like every day there’s a new “must-try” hairstyle. I say, just wear it however you feel comfortable, and don’t worry about what the magazines say. If you feel like a big curly mess that day then so be it. If you feel fancy then you braid it and what have ya.
Taking care of curly hair, that’s another thing. They say you gotta use special shampoos and conditioners, and you gotta be real gentle with it, ’cause it breaks easy. And you can’t just brush it any old way, oh no. You gotta use special combs and brushes, or maybe just your fingers, and you gotta do it when it’s wet or something like that. It all sounds like a lot of work to me, but if you want them curls to look nice, I guess you gotta put in the effort. They say healthy looking curly hair is easy enough to get if you just use the right stuff and pay attention to what your hair is like, so there ya go, easy peasy they say.
So, that’s my two cents on curly hair. It’s just hair, at the end of the day. But if it makes you feel good, then go ahead and fuss over it all you want. Just don’t let it take over your whole life, ya hear? There’s more important things in this world than a head full of curls, no matter how bouncy or shiny they are. You gotta take care of yourself, inside and out, and that’s the real secret to looking good, whether you got curly hair, straight hair, or no hair at all.
