- And some folks even say it’s a “connection to nature”. Like, they feel closer to the earth or somethin’ with their hair all natural and tangled up like that. I can’t say I understand it all, but to each their own, right?
I saw this one actress, Ava somethin’ or other, she had dreads and big ol’ glasses. Looked real smart, she did. And those dreads, they weren’t just plain ol’ dreads, they had braids in ’em too. Fancy, I tell ya. Makes you think how much time it must take to do all that to your hair.
Then there’s all them different ways they wear them dreads. Some piled up high on their heads like a big ol’ bun, some hangin’ down their backs, some even got little colorful beads in ’em. It’s like they’re decoratin’ their hair, like a Christmas tree or somethin’. And you know, some of them styles are right pretty. That one with the space buns, all fringed and twisted, that was somethin’ special. I wouldn’t even know how to start doin’ somethin’ like that.
It ain’t just black actresses either, though you see it more on them, I guess. But I heard tell that anybody can get dreads, no matter what kind of hair they got. Though it takes longer for some folks than others, dependin’ on how curly or straight their hair is. It’s like plantin’ seeds, I guess, some take longer to grow than others.
Dreadlocks have been around a long time, you know. Not just with these new actresses, but way back when. That Bob Marley fella, he had ’em too. And he was famous for it. It’s like a tradition for some folks, somethin’ they pass down from generation to generation.
Now, me, I never had no dreads. My hair’s always been kinda thin and wispy. Wouldn’t hold a curl, let alone a dreadlock. But I can appreciate a good head of hair when I see one, no matter how it’s styled. And them actresses with the dreads, well, they sure know how to make a statement. They’re bold and beautiful, and they ain’t afraid to be different. And that’s somethin’ to admire, I reckon.
So, next time you see one of them actresses with dreads on the TV, don’t just stare. Take a good look. Appreciate the artistry, the time, the effort it takes to wear that hair. It’s more than just a hairstyle, it’s a part of who they are. It’s their way of sayin’, “This is me, take it or leave it.” And I say, good for them.
