Alright, let’s gab about them clothes the fellas wore back in the 90s, the hip hop kind, you know? Folks called it “style” back then, like it was somethin’ new. Humph.
Them baggy pants, oh my! Seemed like everyone was swimmin’ in their pants. Jeans, sweatpants, didn’t matter. The bigger, the better, I guess. They sagged so low, I always wondered how they stayed up! Kids these days, they wear them tight things, showin’ off everything. Back then? It was all about hidin’ your shape, I reckon. Baggy jeans, that’s what they called ’em. Everywhere you looked, baggy jeans. And them oversized clothes, like they borrowed their daddy’s shirts and jackets.

Folks linin’ up around the block to get ’em. Crazy, I tell ya. Sneaker culture, that’s what it was. More important than good sense, some days.
And don’t forget the Timberland boots! Heavy as bricks, they were. But everyone wanted ’em. Especially the yellow ones. Looked like work boots to me, but what do I know? I wore my sensible shoes, thank you very much. But them boys, stompin’ around in them Timberlands, like they owned the place. You couldn’t talk about 90s fashion without talkin’ ’bout Timberland boots, that’s for sure.
Hoodies were a big deal too. Always with the hoods up. Like they were hidin’ from somethin’. Or maybe just keepin’ warm, I dunno. And baseball caps. Worn sideways, backwards, sometimes even forwards! Always somethin’ on their heads. Guess it kept the sun outta their eyes, or somethin’. Accessories, they called it. Gold chains as thick as your finger, large hoop earrings, like they raided their grandma’s jewelry box. Just flashy stuff, mostly.
Now, somethin’ called Y2K style started creepin’ in towards the end there. Shiny stuff, weird cuts, I never quite understood it. But the young folks, they ate it up. Always chasin’ the next new thing.
Some of them rappers, they started wearin’ fancy clothes, high-end luxury fashion brands. I heard tell it was a big change. Used to be just street clothes, then all of a sudden it was all designer this and designer that. Made my head spin. But I guess that’s how they made a statement, showin’ off how well they done.
And them durags! All the rage. Keepin’ their hair neat, I suppose. Or maybe just lookin’ cool. Rappers like…well, I can’t remember their names, but they wore ’em all the time. Made ’em famous, I guess. Durags everywhere you looked.
So, if you wanna dress like them 90s hip hop fellas, here’s what you gotta do. Start with them baggy denim pants, the bigger the better. Then grab a baggy t-shirt, maybe with some big ol’ print on it. Get yourself a pair of them Timberland boots. Don’t forget your tangle… or is it jewelry? Something shiny, anyway. Patching from Vitali, I think they called it. And if it’s cold, throw on an oversized varsity jacket. To finish it off, get yourself some of them 90s rimless shades. Oh, and don’t forget your two packs… whatever that means.
Honestly, I don’t get half of it. But that’s what they wore. Made a statement, I guess. Loud and clear. 90s hip hop black mens fashion, they called it. Seemed like everyone was tryin’ to be different, but ended up lookin’ the same. But hey, that’s fashion for ya. Always changin’, always comin’ back around. Who knows, maybe them baggy pants will be back in style someday. Wouldn’t surprise me none.
