Who made lip gloss? Learn the easy story behind it!

by Afra Jennings

Alright, let’s talk about lip gloss. I’ve always been curious about who came up with this stuff, so I decided to do some digging and get my hands dirty.

First, I did a little research online. I found out that lip gloss was invented by a guy named Max Factor back in 1930. Apparently, he wanted something to make lips look shiny and glossy in movies. Movie stars, huh?

But wait, it goes way back. It seems like the ancient Egyptians, both men and women, were using something similar. They used natural stuff like beeswax and plant oils to make their lips moist and shiny. So, you could say they were the original lip gloss users!

After I got the history down, I wanted to see what lip gloss is actually made of. It turns out most lip glosses are made with wax or petroleum jelly. This stuff makes it easy to glide on your lips. Then, they add fragrances, oils, and colors to make it smell and look good.

So, I thought, why not try making some myself? I gathered some beeswax and some oils. Let me tell you, melting beeswax is a bit of a chore, but I managed. Then, I mixed in some oils and a little bit of food coloring for fun. It was a bit messy, and I’m not sure I got the proportions right, but hey, I made lip gloss!

My Lip Gloss Experiment

  • Gathering Supplies: I started by getting all the ingredients. Finding beeswax was a little tricky, but I found some online. The oils were easier – I just used some I had at home.
  • Melting the Wax: I tried melting the beeswax in a double boiler. It took longer than I expected, but eventually, it melted into a gooey liquid.
  • Mixing Ingredients: Once the wax was melted, I mixed in the oils and added a bit of food coloring. I tried a few different colors, just to see how they would turn out.
  • Cooling and Testing: Finally, I poured the mixture into some small containers and let it cool. It solidified pretty quickly. The first time I tried it, it was a little too sticky, so I adjusted the amount of oil in the next batch.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely lip gloss. And it was kind of cool to think that I was doing something people have been doing for thousands of years, in a way. It’s not as fancy as the stuff you buy in stores, but I made it, and that’s pretty satisfying!

In the end, I learned a lot about lip gloss. From its fancy Hollywood origins to its ancient roots, and even making it in my own kitchen. It was a fun little project, and now I have a whole new appreciation for the shiny stuff.
