Saw some stuff about Theo James and Hugo Boss the other day. You know, the ads and pictures. He always looks pretty sharp, gotta give him that. Slick suits, that serious look. Makes you think about fancy clothes.

It actually kicked off a memory for me, a time I really had to step up my game, appearance-wise. Wasn’t for an ad, that’s for sure. It was for my first proper job interview after messing around with smaller gigs for ages. This was like, a real company, with an actual office building, not just some rented room.

Getting Ready Felt Like a Project

So, I knew I needed a suit. My usual stuff just wouldn’t cut it. Problem was, I didn’t own one. Not a real one anyway. I think I had some old blazer from a wedding years ago that didn’t even fit right anymore.

The Hunt Begins

First, I actually went to look around some decent shops. Just to see. Walked past a Hugo Boss display, saw the prices. Nope. Not happening on my budget back then. It all looked amazing, really well-made, but completely out of reach. Felt a bit deflating, seeing stuff like that and knowing it wasn’t for me.

Ended up in one of those big department stores, digging through the sale racks. Found a basic black suit. Nothing fancy, probably polyester mostly. Tried it on in the fitting room. It fit… okay. A bit stiff. Didn’t feel like ‘me’ at all, felt like I was playing dress-up as a serious adult.

The Big Day

  • Woke up early.
  • Put the suit on. Fiddled with the tie for like, 15 minutes. Couldn’t get the knot right.
  • Looked in the mirror. Still felt weird. Imposter syndrome kicked in hard.
  • Walked to the interview feeling super self-conscious. Like everyone knew this wasn’t my natural habitat.

What Happened Then

The interview itself was okay, I guess. Standard questions. Tried to act confident, like I belonged in that suit, in that office. Don’t know if I pulled it off. Probably looked nervous as hell. Did I get the job? Nope. Got the email a few days later.

It’s funny looking back. Seeing Theo James looking smooth in Hugo Boss reminds me of that whole experience. It makes me think how much is the clothes, and how much is just the person, the confidence they have already? That suit didn’t magically give me confidence or skills I didn’t have. It was just… a suit. Maybe a nicer one, like a Boss, would feel different, who knows? But my own little ‘practice’ run with the whole suit thing was definitely less glamorous than the ads.
