My Wild Goose Chase for Saks
Okay, needed to head to Saks Fifth Avenue in Garden City, NY later today. Sounds simple, right? Figured I’d just punch it into my phone and go. Big mistake.
First thing, popped open Google Maps on my laptop while drinking coffee. Typed in “Saks Fifth Avenue Garden City”. Boom, it shows me this spot right near some mall entrance. Address looked roughly okay. Cool, I thought, saved that pin. Grabbed my keys.
Got to Garden City, heading towards where Google said it should be. Circling around… nope. Nothing that looked like a big Saks storefront. Just other stores and the mall structure. Totally confused now. Pulled over, feeling stupid. Checked my phone again. Yep, Google Maps insisting it’s right here. But it absolutely wasn’t.
Alright, switch tactics. Pulled up Apple Maps this time. Searched the same thing. Guess what? It plopped a pin in a completely different part of the mall complex! Not even close to where Google said. Now I’m actually annoyed. Two different apps saying two different places? How hard can finding a huge department store be?
Parked the car, decided to go old school. Found a directory board inside the mall entrance I was near. Scrolled through lists of stores… Abercrombie, Banana Republic… lots of stuff, but no Saks listed. Seriously? Maybe I was in the wrong section? Wandered around inside for a bit, glancing down every corridor. No luck. Super frustrating. Time ticking, and I really needed to get this shopping done.
Sat down on one of those mall benches feeling deflated. Then, duh moment hit me. Why am I trusting random maps and mall signs? Why haven’t I just asked the store itself? Pulled out my phone again, but this time I went straight to the official Saks Fifth Avenue website. Hunted for their store locator.
Found it. Typed “Garden City, NY” into their finder. And there it was. The official address plain as day: 630 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY. Inside the Roosevelt Field mall. My phone maps weren’t just a little off; one was embarrassingly wrong, the other not much better. Their own site even showed a simple map of the mall layout, indicating which entrance was best.
Here’s what I should have done from the start:
- Skip the general maps apps completely for specific big stores inside malls.
- Always, always, always go straight to the store’s OWN website and use their locator tool.
- Trust their map and description over anything else.
Turns out, Saks is indeed inside Roosevelt Field mall. Using the address Saks themselves provided got me right to the correct parking garage entrance near them. Made it with time to spare. Such a simple thing turned into such a silly little adventure because I didn’t just ask the source first. Lesson learned the hard way!
