So, I kept seeing stuff about this makeup guy, Sam Visser. You know, the one who does makeup for a lot of famous faces. His style looked really cool, kinda sharp but still natural, if that makes sense. I thought, okay, let me give one of his signature things a try.

Trying the Sculpted Look

I decided to focus on that sculpted cheek look he does. It always looks so precise on models like Bella Hadid. My own contouring is usually a bit… well, less thought out. Just a quick swipe.

First, I pulled up some photos of his work. Stared at them for a bit. Really tried to figure out where he puts the contour and highlight. It seemed higher than I normally go, more angled.

Then I got my makeup bag out. Found my usual contour stick, a powder bronzer just in case, my highlighter, and a couple of brushes. Did my base makeup – foundation, concealer – the usual stuff. Needed a smooth starting point.

Okay, the contour part. I took the stick and tried placing it higher on my cheekbone, sort of aiming towards my temple. Felt a bit strange, not gonna lie. Like I was putting it way too high.

Blending was the next mission. This seemed super important for his look. It’s sculpted, yeah, but never muddy or stripey. So I blended. And blended some more. Used a damp sponge, then a brush. Took way longer than my normal routine. I really wanted it to melt into the skin, you know?

  • Put contour higher than usual.
  • Angled it towards the temples.
  • Spent ages blending it out.

Adding Highlight and The Result

Next up, highlighter. From the pictures, it looked like he uses it pretty strategically. Just little pops of light. So I dabbed a tiny bit on the very top of my cheekbones, above the contour. Also a little on my brow bone and the tip of my nose.

Then I stepped back and looked. It was… different. Definitely sharper than my usual look. My cheekbones looked more defined, maybe a bit more lifted? It wasn’t a perfect copy, obviously. I mean, I’m just messing around in my bathroom, not working backstage at a fashion show.

But it wasn’t bad! It felt a bit dramatic for just sitting at home, but I could see wearing it if I was going out somewhere nice. The key really was that higher placement and all the blending. It took patience, which I don’t always have.

So yeah, that was my little experiment trying to copy a bit of Sam Visser’s technique. It was fun to try something specific and see how it turned out. Made me think more about placement, which I guess is always good. Might try it again when I have more time and somewhere to actually go.
