Okay, so the other day, I decided it was time to give my backyard a little makeover. I’ve been staring at this sad patch of dirt and patchy grass for months, and I finally thought, “Screw it, let’s do something about it.” I’d been seeing all these awesome lawns online and thought, why not try laying some diamond turfs? So I did a bit of digging around, no pun intended, and got started.
First thing I did was to measure out the area I wanted to cover. I grabbed my old tape measure and jotted down some numbers. I figure I would need more or less the amount of turf for it to look right. This step is crucial to know how much turf is needed to cover the yard.
Prepare the Ground
After that, I had to prepare the ground. Now, this is where the real work began. I grabbed my shovel and started clearing out all the old grass, weeds, rocks, and whatever else was lurking in there. It was a bit of a workout, I won’t lie. I even rented a rotovator to make things easier, which was a lifesaver, to be honest. This part took me the better part of a day, but it’s super important to have a nice, even base to work with. I even spread some sand over my work, it is said that sand can help with drainage and leveling.
Lay the Turf
Next up, actually laying the turf. I had ordered the turf a few days before, and it arrived all rolled up and ready to go. I unrolled the first piece and carefully laid it down, making sure it was nice and straight. Then I just kept going, piece by piece, trimming off any excess with a utility knife. It was kind of like putting together a giant, green jigsaw puzzle.
Secure the Turf
Once all the turf was down, I made sure it is secured. I used some of those long landscaping staples to pin it down around the edges and in a few spots in the middle. This will help to keep it in place, especially when it gets windy. I mean, I didn’t want my new lawn flying away, right?
Spread Infill and Rake
Last step was to spread some silica sand infill over the whole thing. I’d read somewhere that this helps to weigh it down and keep the blades standing up straight. It was a bit messy, but I just dumped a bag of sand on there and used a rake to spread it around evenly. After that, I gave the whole thing a good watering to settle everything in.
And that’s pretty much it! It took me a couple of days of work, but I’m actually really happy with how it turned out. My backyard looks so much better now, and it’s a lot nicer to walk on. Plus, I don’t have to worry about mowing the lawn anymore, which is a huge bonus. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, I’d say go for it. Just be prepared to put in a bit of elbow grease, and you’ll be golden.
