Getting My Hands on the Murph Watch
Alright, let’s talk about this watch, the Hamilton they call the ‘Murph’. Wasn’t really looking for a new watch, honestly. Just kinda happened. I saw that movie, Interstellar, like pretty much everyone else did. Good movie. Remembered seeing the watch play a part in the story, something about Morse code, ‘Eureka’, all that.
Didn’t think much of it right after. But later, I was just browsing online, looking at watches maybe, can’t recall exactly why. Saw a picture of it. That Hamilton Khaki Field. The ‘Murph’ version. It clicked. Oh yeah, that watch. Looked it up properly then.
Found out Hamilton actually made the thing. Not just some movie prop, but a real watch you could buy. That got me interested. I like straightforward stuff, things that work. This looked like a solid field watch. No fancy stuff, just the time. Liked the look of it too. Classic design.
Thought about it for a bit. Checked the price. Wasn’t cheap, but not crazy expensive either, you know? Weighed it up. Do I need another watch? Probably not. Did I want this one? Yeah, kinda did. It had that cool movie link, sure, but mostly I just liked the watch itself. Simple, mechanical, seemed reliable.
So, I decided to go for it. Didn’t hunt around local stores much, figured it’d be easier online. Found a reputable dealer, checked reviews, looked okay. Added it to the cart. Pulled the trigger. Paid for it. Then the waiting started. Always the worst part, waiting for something you’ve ordered.
Package arrived a few days later. Pretty standard shipping box. Opened it up. Inside was the Hamilton box. Have to say, the packaging was pretty neat. They put some effort into that, with the special box echoing the ‘tesseract’ thing from the movie. Nice touch, I guess, even if I’m not huge on fancy boxes.
Took the watch out. Felt good in the hand. Solid. Good weight to it. Stainless steel case. Leather strap felt decent quality right away. Wound it up. Started ticking. That nice sweep of the second hand you get with automatics. I appreciate that.
Put it on my wrist. Size felt right for me, not too big, not too small. The dial is super easy to read. Big numerals. Clean layout. No date window, which honestly, I prefer sometimes. Less to fiddle with.
Been wearing it quite a bit since then. It keeps good time. It’s comfortable. Does exactly what a watch is supposed to do: tell you the time reliably. The movie connection is a conversation starter sometimes, if people recognize it. That’s fine. But mostly, I just wear it because I like it as a watch.
