Okay, so let me tell you about this whole “day outfits” thing for women, or at least, how I finally got a grip on my own mess. For ages, my mornings were a disaster. Seriously. I’d open my closet, and it was like staring into a black hole of clothes I never wore. So much stuff, but somehow, I had nothing to wear. You know that feeling, right? It was stressing me out, making me late, and honestly, just making me feel blah before the day even started.

I was complaining to a friend, or maybe I was just doom-scrolling online, probably the latter, when I stumbled upon this idea. Some people were talking about a challenge. It sounded kinda simple, maybe too simple? It was this thing where you pick three tops, three bottoms, and three shoes. That’s it. And then you try to make as many outfits as you can from just those nine items. I later found out the whole concept apparently kicked off with a TikTok creator, Rachel Spencer. Clever, huh?
My First Attempt at This Outfit Game
So, I thought, why not? Couldn’t be worse than my current “stare and despair” method. One Saturday, I decided to actually do it. First step? Facing the beast – my wardrobe. I pulled out a bunch of stuff. My bed disappeared under piles of clothes. It was chaos for a good hour.
Then, the hard part: choosing. Just three tops? Agony! I went for:
- A plain white t-shirt, ’cause, classic.
- A comfy knit sweater, a neutral color.
- A slightly nicer blouse, something I could dress up a tiny bit.
For bottoms, I picked:
- My favorite pair of jeans, the ones that just fit right.
- A pair of black tailored trousers, super versatile.
- A simple A-line skirt, because sometimes you just want a skirt.
And shoes, oh boy, shoes are my weakness. But I forced myself:

- Clean white sneakers, for everyday running around.
- A pair of flat, comfy ankle boots.
- Some simple black heels, just in case.
Okay, so I had my nine items laid out. Looked a bit sad and small compared to the mountain I usually faced. I was skeptical, really skeptical.
Mixing, Matching, and a Little Bit of Magic
Then I started actually putting outfits together. This is where it got interesting. I grabbed the white tee and jeans, then paired them with the sneakers. Outfit one. Easy. White tee, jeans, boots. Outfit two. White tee, black trousers, heels. Outfit three. Okay, not bad. I kept going. The blouse with the skirt and heels. The sweater with the jeans and sneakers. The sweater over the blouse with the trousers and boots.
I literally started making a list, just to see. And you know what? I was shocked. I easily got way more outfits than I thought I would. Like, over ten, maybe closer to fifteen if I got creative with tucking things in or adding a belt I already had (though the core was just those nine items). My mind was kinda blown. All that from just nine pieces of clothing!
The best part? The next week, getting dressed was so, so much easier. I just looked at my little curated collection. No more decision overload. I actually felt like I had more options, even though I was technically working with less. It sounds weird, but it’s true. It made me realize I don’t need a million things. I just need a few good things that actually work together.
So yeah, that’s my little experiment with trying to sort out my day outfits. It wasn’t some magic bullet, and I still have way too many clothes, if I’m being honest. But it really helped me see my wardrobe differently. Maybe it’s something you could try if you’re stuck in that “closet full of nothing” rut too!
