What Are Circular Fashion Brands? A Beginners Guide (Understanding Sustainable Fashion)

by Cornell Yule

Circular fashion, what a topic. I heard some friends talking about it the other day, and it really got me thinking. I mean, we all know that the fashion industry isn’t exactly the most eco-friendly, right? So, I got curious and decided to try something out.

First, I hit up the internet and did some reading. I found out that circular fashion is basically about reducing waste and getting the most out of the stuff we have. It’s like, instead of just buying clothes, using them, and then throwing them away, we try to keep them in use for as long as possible. Maybe we repair them, or pass them on to someone else, or even recycle them into something new. Sounds good in theory, yeah?

Then, I started looking for brands that are actually doing this circular thing. It’s not as easy as it sounds. I mean, a lot of brands talk about sustainability, but when you dig deeper, it’s not always the whole picture. Anyway, I found some that seemed legit, like this one brand called Astor & Orion, which focus on the jewelry aspect.

After that, I decided to change my own habits a bit. I started by looking at my closet. I had so many clothes that I never wear. So, I decided to donate some of them to a local charity shop. I also tried to repair a few items that had small tears or missing buttons instead of just tossing them out.

I also started thinking more about my purchases. Before buying something new, I’d ask myself if I really needed it, and if I did, I’d try to find it secondhand or from a brand that’s known for being more sustainable. It’s not always easy, I found that some brands are really taking the concept of the circular economy seriously.

  • Reduce: I started buying less and only getting things I truly needed.
  • Reuse: I started looking for pre-owned clothes and selling or donating the ones I don’t wear anymore.
  • Recycle: I checked for brands that use recycled materials in their clothes.
  • Repurpose: I tried upcycling old clothes into something new. Like, I turned an old T-shirt into cleaning rags.

It’s definitely a learning process, but it’s something I’m trying to stick to. It feels good to know that I’m doing my little part to make the fashion industry a bit more circular.

My Takeaway

It’s still early days, but I think circular fashion is something we should all be thinking about. It’s not just about saving the planet, it’s also about being more mindful of what we consume. It’s a win-win, you know? And even small changes can make a difference, like choosing to repair something instead of throwing it away. We just have to keep trying.
