The Hunt for Examples

Dug through my own closet first. Found stuff I bought years apart that looked weirdly similar. That “ah-huh?” moment. Pulled out:

  • Some shiny, tiny sunglasses bought ironically in 2019
  • This stupid puffy vest I only wore once
  • A chunky ugly sweater my aunt gifted me

Suddenly realized: “Y2K Revival” basically means all that weird early-2000s stuff Gen Z found in thrift stores is now expensive. My freebie sunglasses were suddenly “on-trend.” Madness.

Decoding Brand Nonsense

Checked store descriptions next. Saw fluffy slippers labeled as “Barbiecore.” Laughed out loud. My niece’s plastic toy wore that first! Googled images of old cartoons side-by-side with current ads. “Barbiecore” is just hot pink overload pretending it’s deep. Felt ripped off knowing I paid $40 for slippers.

Then saw “Quiet Luxury.” Thought it meant actual quality. Nope. It’s just rich people colours. Beige sweaters, cream pants, white t-shirts. Minimalist? Try minimal effort. Found three brands selling near-identical tan sweaters. All priced differently. All calling it “quiet luxury.” Marketing win, my wallet loses.

The Outdoor Stuff Got Me

“Gorpcore” confused me most. Apparently means wearing hiking gear everywhere? Dug out my actual rain jacket from camping. Saw fashion sites selling similar ones for triple the price… without the waterproof rating! Style over function wins. Again. Makes zero sense wearing a tech fleece to brunch, but hey – it’s a “theme.”

Putting It Together

Here’s the ugly truth I figured out:

  • Themes are just shortcuts for designers. Stuck? Recycle old styles!
  • Brands slap buzzwords onto anything. Basic black hoodie? Call it “Street Goth.” Sell it for more.
  • We’ve seen it all before. Y2K? Been there. Normcore? Wore that ironically five years ago.

Stood in my messy room surrounded by old clothes. Realized themes aren’t about new ideas. It’s just repackaging nostalgia. Cheaper fabrics, louder names. Made a mental note: next “vintage revival” theme hits, I’m raiding my dad’s closet first.
