Well, hello there, young’uns! Let me tell ya ’bout this here… uh… suede brown purse thingy. My grandaughter, she’s got one, you know? Fancy thing. I ain’t never had nothin’ like it. Back in my day, we just carried our stuff in our aprons, or maybe a feed sack if we were goin’ to town. But these young folks, they gotta have their purses. And this suede brown one, well, it’s somethin’ special, I guess.
First off, what is this “suede” stuff anyway? Feels kinda like a soft cowhide, only…fancier. Like them city folks took a perfectly good cow and rubbed it with somethin’ to make it all fuzzy. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s soft and nice to touch. But is it gonna hold up? That’s what I wanna know. My old feed sack, now, that thing lasted for years. You could drag it through the mud, stuff it full of taters, and it’d still be good to go. This here suede purse… I dunno. Seems a bit delicate to me.
Now, the color. Brown. Well, that’s practical, I s’pose. Dirt don’t show up so much on brown. That’s why we always painted the barn brown, you see? And the outhouse. Brown just blends in. Makes sense for a purse, I guess. You don’t want folks seein’ every little smudge and stain. But is it pretty? Well, it ain’t no bright red poppy, that’s for sure. But it’s… earthy. Like a good, solid piece of land. Reliable, you know?
My grandaughter, she keeps all sorts of things in her suede brown purse. Lipstick, compact, cell phone thingy… I ain’t never seen so many doodads in one place. Me, I just carry my money in a little cloth pouch tucked in my bra. Safer that way, I figure. But these young folks, they gotta have their things organized, I guess. And this purse, well, it’s got pockets and zippers and little compartments for everything. Like a little travelin’ toolbox, only for makeup and such.
- Pockets are important, she says. Gotta keep your phone separate from your keys, or it’ll get scratched. Sounds complicated to me.
- The zipper’s gotta be strong. She had one of them fancy purses before, with a flimsy zipper, and it broke right off. Lost all her stuff, she did. So, she’s real particular about the zipper now. This suede brown one, it’s got a good, sturdy zipper, I’ll give it that.
- And it’s gotta be big enough, she says, to hold all her “essentials.” Essentials! Back in my day, essentials were a hoe, a shovel, and a good pair of boots. But I guess times change.
Now, how much do you reckon one of these suede brown purses costs? I bet it’s more than I made in a whole month pickin’ cotton back in the day. My grandaughter, she says it’s an “investment.” An investment! In a purse? Sounds like foolishness to me. But she seems happy with it. She says it goes with everything. Her jeans, her dresses, even that fancy pantsuit she wears to her city job. Says it makes her feel “put together.” Well, I s’pose that’s important, lookin’ all “put together.” Back in my day, we were just glad to be put together enough to get through the day without fallin’ apart!
So, is this suede brown purse worth all the fuss? I dunno. Seems like a lot of money for something that just holds your stuff. But if it makes my grandaughter happy, then I s’pose it’s alright. She works hard, and if she wants a fancy purse, then she’s earned it. Me, I’ll stick with my cloth pouch. It’s held up just fine all these years, and it don’t cost me a fortune. But that suede brown purse, it’s got a certain somethin’ to it, I gotta admit. Maybe it’s that soft, fuzzy feel. Or maybe it’s just the idea of havin’ somethin’ nice and new. Whatever it is, it sure does seem to make them young folks happy.
And that, I guess, is all that really matters.
