Okay, so I wanted to mess around with that SNL Pandora sketch that everyone’s been talking about. I’ve always been curious about how skits are put together, so I figured, why not try recreating a bit of it myself? Just for fun, you know?
First, I watched the sketch like a million times. Seriously, I paused, rewound, and took notes like I was studying for a final. I needed to get the timing and the vibe just right.
The Setup
- I grabbed my phone. That was going to be my “Pandora” interface.
- I found some random royalty-free music online. I needed something that sounded vaguely like those generic Pandora stations.
- I roped in my roommate, bless her heart, to play the “annoying coworker” part. We didn’t have a full cast, obviously, so we had to improvise.
The Action (and the Mess-Ups)
We started by trying to mimic the opening scene. My roommate kept cracking up, which, honestly, made it even funnier. It took us a few tries to get the “awkward small talk” down without bursting into laughter.
Then, I pretended to “discover” the cursed Pandora station. I played the generic music and we tried to recreate the escalating weirdness of the original sketch. We added in some of our own terrible song suggestions, just shouting them out randomly.
It was… chaotic. We definitely didn’t have the smooth transitions or the perfect comedic timing of the SNL cast. My roommate forgot her lines a couple of times, and I tripped over the coffee table at one point (graceful, I know). But, we were laughing the whole time, so that’s a win, right?
The Result (Sort Of)
We ended up with a bunch of shaky phone footage and a lot of outtakes. It’s definitely not something I’d show on TV, but it was a blast to make. It gave me a whole new appreciation for how much work goes into those SNL sketches. They make it look so easy!
I’m thinking I might clean the recordings and do the same things with other funny sketches.
