So I’ve been trying to figure out how to look put-together at work without spending too much time or money. Found this super basic outfit formula last month – here’s what happened when I tried it out.

Starting completely lost
First off, my closet was chaos. Pulled out these items:
- Three plain t-shirts
- Two button-down shirts I never wore
- That blazer from my cousin’s wedding
- Two pairs of decent pants
- Comfy black flats
Realized I had way more weekend clothes than work stuff. Like those band tees? Definitely not office material.
The test run disaster
Tried just blazer + t-shirt combo on Tuesday. Big mistake – looked like I forgot my shirt! Got asked if I was heading to a concert after work. Next day did button-down alone. Felt weirdly formal like I was interviewing. Too stiff.
Stumbling into the sweet spot
Thursday accidentally put the blazer OVER the button-down. Magic happened. The collar peeked out just enough to look intentional. Threw on dark pants and those boring flats. Got two compliments before lunch! One coworker asked if I got a haircut – nope, just clothes.

Why this actually works
The formula’s stupid simple:
- Top layer: Any structured piece (blazer/cardigan)
- Middle layer: Button-down or fine-knit sweater
- Bottom: Dark pants/skirt (no rips!)
- Shoes: Clean & comfy (flats/loafers)
Key is mixing textures. That jacket covers coffee stains too. Takes literal three minutes to throw together now.
Still wear my graphic tees…but now I just put that blazer on top. Office thinks I upgraded my wardrobe. Truth? Just rearranged the closet. Might try this with cardigans next week.
