The Idea Spark
It all started when I was scrolling through some design blogs and kept seeing these images of clothes that looked like they belonged in a lab. Think clean lines, weird textures, and a whole lotta’ asymmetry. I was like, “Huh, I wonder if I could actually make something like that?” Challenge accepted!
Scrounging for Supplies
- First thing’s first: materials. I raided my closet, hit up a thrift store, and even dug through my grandma’s attic (shhh, don’t tell her!). I ended up with:
- An old lab coat (score!)
- Some Tyvek material (the stuff they use for those disposable suits)
- A bunch of random zippers and buckles
- Leftover fabric scraps in gray, white, and a touch of neon green
Deconstruction Time
This is where things got messy… in a fun way! I basically took the lab coat apart at the seams. I wanted to use it as a base, but also completely transform it. The Tyvek was ripped and crumpled to give it texture. Think of it like reverse origami.
Sewing (and Un-Sewing)
My sewing skills are… well, let’s just say I’m better at taking things apart than putting them back together. There was a lot of seam ripping involved. I started by attaching the Tyvek pieces to the lab coat panels, creating these weird, angular shapes. Then came the zippers and buckles. My idea was to make the garment adjustable and kind of modular.
The “Accidental” Design Features
Okay, so not everything went according to plan. There were definitely some happy accidents along the way. For example, I accidentally sewed a zipper on backward. Instead of fixing it, I just went with it. It actually added this cool, asymmetrical vibe to the whole thing. Sometimes, mistakes are the best part, you know?

The final product? It’s definitely… unique. It’s a cross between a lab coat, a futuristic spacesuit, and something you might see in a sci-fi movie. Would I wear it out in public? Maybe not. But I learned a ton during the process.
