Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with unique architecture lately, and I stumbled upon this thing called the “Whale House” in Santa Barbara. I was like, “What the heck is that?” So, naturally, I had to check it out.
First, I did some digging online. Turns out, it’s this crazy, organic-looking house designed by Michael Carmichael. It’s supposed to resemble, well, a whale. I found some pictures, and it looked wild—all curves and unusual shapes. I was totally intrigued.
I’m not exactly near Santa Barbara, so a real-life visit wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. So I put on my detective hat and started my deep dive.
I tried to piece together what I could. Apparently, the place is covered in these unique cedar shingles, and the inside is just as weird and wonderful as the outside.
I looked for virtual tours, and unfortunately no luck. I guess it is someones’s house and not a muesum!
I did find an old article, it talks about how Carmichael took inspiration from Antoni Gaudí, you know, that famous architect from Barcelona. Makes sense when you look at the curvy, almost bonelike structure.
My takeaway? This Whale House is a prime example of thinking outside the box. It’s a reminder that architecture doesn’t have to be all straight lines and right angles. This build is a labor of love. I wish I could see the inside, I bet I’d love all the details!
