What Made Me Start
Got my cute Prada raffia tote out for summer, like I do every year. Put my sunglasses, keys, and wallet in – boom! Spotted a weird dark stain near the bottom corner. No clue what it was. Panic! It’s not old, but I realized I hadn’t really cleaned it properly since I bought it last season. Just kinda wiped dust off sometimes. This stain staring at me told me I needed to do something, and like, actually learn how to care for it.

First Dumb Attempt (Don’t Do This!)
Okay, being honest, my first thought was soap and water. I mean, what could go wrong, right? Wrong! Grabbed some dish soap from under the sink, mixed a little with water on a cloth, and rubbed gently at the stain. It… did nothing. Nada. Tried a little harder. Still nada. Then I noticed the area felt kinda rough and a bit darker where I rubbed. Yikes. Stopped immediately. Looked it up online quickly and basically everything screamed “NO WATER!” on raffia. Felt pretty stupid.
Got desperate. Saw someone mention vinegar mix for stains elsewhere. Big mistake numero dos. Dabbed a tiny bit of super diluted white vinegar on another hidden spot. Seemed okay for a minute? Wiped it off. Five minutes later, that spot felt weirdly stiff. Panic doubled. Decided I was absolutely making things worse and needed to stop playing chemist.
Actually Finding the Right Stuff
Went rummaging through my old handbag supplies stash. Found this bottle of special fabric & straw cleaner I bought years ago for a different bag and totally forgot about. Instructions specifically mentioned raffia! Jackpot? Hoped so. First, I brushed the whole bag really lightly with a super soft makeup brush to get rid of surface dust and lint – surprisingly effective.
The Actual Cleaning Process That Worked
Took a deep breath. Found a brand new, super soft white microfiber cloth (read somewhere colour might transfer, no chances). Got my forgotten bottle of straw cleaner. Sprayed a tiny, tiny amount directly onto the cloth, not the bag. Started lightly rubbing the stain in tiny circles. Didn’t push hard. You could see the gunk lifting onto the cloth a little! Kept dabbing with the dirty part of the cloth and moving to a clean spot. Patience was key.
The stain took maybe 10 minutes of gentle dabbing to fade significantly. Didn’t get it 100% invisible, like 95% gone and only noticeable if you stuck your nose to it. Way better!

Let it air dry completely, sitting upright in the shade inside – definitely not in sunlight or near heat. Left it overnight.
Finishing Touches & What I Learned
Next morning, the spot felt good, not stiff, colour looked even. Relief. To help protect it for the season, I sprayed it with a fabric protector spray meant for delicate materials. Did light, even sprays from a distance. Another air dry session. Finally brushed it again lightly with that super soft brush. Honestly, it looked fresher overall, way better than before the stain fiasco.
Key stuff I figured out:
- Water is Enemy #1 for raw raffia. Just skip it completely.
- Test ANYTHING hidden first. Don’t go blasting cleaner on a visible spot.
- Less Product is More. Seriously. Overspraying or using too much cleaner is asking for trouble.
- Softness is Critical. Use the softest cloths you have, barely touch it, and only use cleaners MADE for raffia or straw.
- Air Dry, Always. Takes time but no shortcuts like sun or hair dryers.
- Regular Dusting Helps. That soft brush makes it look cleaner without much effort.
So yeah, my poor bag got experimented on, but now it looks great and I know exactly how to keep it looking newer much longer than before. Feels good!
