Pin brooch DIY ideas: How to make your own unique designs

by Cornell Yule

Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into making my own accessories, and I figured a pin brooch would be a good place to start. It seemed simple enough, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey!

First, I gathered all my materials. I had some old buttons, beads, and broken jewelry lying around that I thought would be perfect. I also picked up some brooch pins from the craft store – the kind with the little safety clasp. And of course, I needed my trusty glue gun and some pliers.

The Creative Chaos Begins

I started by playing around with different arrangements. I laid out all my bits and pieces on the table and just moved things around until I found a design I liked. It was kind of like putting together a puzzle, except there was no picture on the box to guide me! I ended up choosing a vintage-looking button as the base, with some smaller beads and a sparkly charm to add some flair.

Once I was happy with the design, I started gluing. Oh boy, the glue gun. Let’s just say there were a few sticky moments and a couple of near-burns. Pro tip: be careful with those things! I applied the glue to the back of the button and then carefully positioned the beads and charm on top. I held them in place for a few seconds to make sure they were secure.

The Tricky Part

The trickiest part was definitely attaching the brooch pin. I used my pliers to gently open the little loop on the back of the pin. Then, I applied a generous amount of glue to the back of my button creation and carefully pressed the pin onto it, making sure the loop was facing the right way so I could actually pin it on later! I left the whole thing to dry overnight, just to be extra sure.

The Final Reveal

The next morning, I checked on my brooch, and it was solid! Success! I pinned it onto my jacket, and it looked pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. It added a nice personal touch to my outfit.

Pin brooch DIY ideas: How to make your own unique designs
  • Gather materials: buttons, beads, charms, brooch pins, glue gun, pliers.
  • Experiment with designs: arrange and rearrange until you find something you like.
  • Glue the elements together: be careful with the glue gun!
  • Attach the brooch pin: use pliers to open the loop and glue it securely.
  • Let it dry completely: patience is key!

It wasn’t perfect, mind you. There were a few glue strings here and there, and maybe the beads weren’t perfectly aligned. But hey, that’s part of the charm of a handmade item, right? It’s unique, and I made it myself! I’m already thinking about my next brooch project – maybe something with feathers this time?
