My Dumb Beginning
Grabbed my cheap DSLR and hit downtown Saturday morning feeling all confident. Snapped like fifty shots of street vendors, stray dogs, some old guy playing chess. Got home, pulled ’em up side-by-side with Steve’s work… yeah. Mine looked sad. Flat. Lifeless. Like grocery lists someone took pictures of.
The Lightbulb Moment
Stared at Steve’s Afghanistan girl photo for maybe twenty minutes straight. Not just her eyes – everything. That torn green curtain behind her? The rusty wall color? How the light only hits half her face? Never noticed that crap before. Felt like an idiot.
Round Two: Stealing His Secrets
Tried copying his style next Tuesday. Hunted down broken walls with flaking paint near the train yard. Waited three hours for decent light. Saw this lady selling flowers in a bright pink sari against this nasty blue wall. Lifted my camera… chickened out. Too scared to ask permission. Steve wouldn’t blink.
- Wednesday: Swallowed my pride. Asked a tea stall owner for a portrait. He nodded. Shot him wiping cups while steam rose around his face. Finally got some mood.
- Thursday: Obsessed over color clashes. Shot a kid’s red ball on wet gray pavement. Actually looked interesting.
- Friday: Stalked construction workers at sunset. Caught one silhouetted against orange sky climbing rebar. Boom – moment mattered.
Biggest takeaway? His photos work ’cause they’re built different:

Changed my whole approach. Now I hunt those little moments where light, color, and people collide. Still suck compared to Steve, but hey – my photos finally got teeth.
