Perlee Van Cleef & Arpels: Which Collection Should You Buy?

by Meredith Sassoon

Okay, so, today I’m gonna ramble about my little dabble with trying to recreate something that looks kinda like a Perlee Van Cleef & Arpels piece. Don’t get me wrong, I love their stuff, it’s gorgeous, but, you know, budget reality hits hard sometimes.

First thing’s first, I needed inspiration. I spent way too long scrolling through pictures of the real deal. I was really digging the simplicity of the beaded design, the way the light catches those little gold spheres. I wasn’t aiming for a perfect replica, just something that captured that same vibe.

Next up, material gathering. I hit up my local craft store. I grabbed some gold-colored wire (nothing fancy, just something that wouldn’t break the bank) and a bunch of small, round gold beads. I thought about using actual gold plating or something, but decided against it. Maybe if this whole thing turns out amazing, I’ll upgrade later.

The actual making was the trickiest part. I started by cutting a length of the wire, and then I just started stringing on the beads. Sounds easy, right? Nope. Keeping the beads evenly spaced was a nightmare. I tried using pliers to pinch the wire between each bead to create those little gaps, but that was a pain.

  • Pro-tip I learned the hard way: Don’t try to string all the beads on at once. Do it in sections. That way, if you mess up, you don’t have to undo the entire thing.
  • Also, a magnifying glass helped a TON. My eyes aren’t what they used to be.

After I got a decent length of beaded wire, I started shaping it. I was going for a simple bracelet, so I just bent the wire into a circle. This is where the wire quality really mattered. Too stiff, and it’d be impossible to shape. Too flimsy, and it wouldn’t hold its form. I ended up redoing this step a couple of times before I got it right.

The closure was another head-scratcher. I didn’t want anything too bulky or distracting. I ended up using a simple hook-and-eye closure, which I also made from the same gold wire. It’s not the most secure thing in the world, but it does the job for now.

Finishing touches. Once everything was assembled, I gave the whole thing a good polish with a soft cloth. This helped to even out the color and bring out a little bit of shine. I also checked for any sharp edges or loose beads. Safety first, people!

The final result? It’s definitely not a Van Cleef & Arpels Perlee, but it’s a pretty decent imitation, if I do say so myself. It’s got that same delicate, beaded look, and it catches the light nicely. Plus, I made it myself, which is kinda cool.

Would I do it again? Probably! Now that I’ve got the basic technique down, I could experiment with different bead sizes, colors, and materials. Maybe even try making a necklace next time. Who knows?
