Maintaining a professional mohawk hairstyle made easy? Simple tricks for daily upkeep.

Okay, so I’d been thinking about changing up my hairstyle for a while. Nothing too drastic, but something… different. I stumbled across the idea of a ‘professional mohawk’. Didn’t even know that was really a thing, but the pictures looked pretty sharp.

It wasn’t like the super spiky punk look, more controlled. Clean sides, strip on top, but styled neat. Thought, why not? Gotta try things, right? So, I decided I was gonna go for it.

Getting Ready

First step was prep. My hair was kinda dry. I remembered reading somewhere that treatments help. So, a couple of times in the week before, I actually slapped some coconut oil in my hair and just left it in overnight. Felt weird, not gonna lie. Made sure to wash it out real good the morning I went to get it cut. Didn’t want the barber dealing with greasy hair.

The Actual Cut

Went to my regular guy. I was a bit hesitant trying to explain what I wanted. Ended up just showing him a few pictures I saved on my phone. I was clear, though. “Keep the sides really short, faded,” I told him, “but leave a good strip on top. Not crazy high, something I can actually style for work.” He nodded, seemed to get it. He used the clippers mostly for the sides, got them nice and tight. Then scissors for the top to shape it up. Took maybe half an hour, forty minutes total.

Styling It Myself

Got home and obviously had to try styling it straight away. Looked a bit flat after just the cut. Had some strong-hold gel lying around. Squeezed a blob out, rubbed my hands together, and just started pushing the top section up and slightly back. Took a few tries to get it looking even. Didn’t want sharp spikes, more like a raised, solid section. It needed a bit of fussing with, definitely.

  • Used a decent amount of gel.
  • Worked it from roots to tips.
  • Used my fingers to shape it.

The Result and Keeping It Going

Looked in the mirror. Yeah, okay. It worked. The sides were super clean, and the top had that defined ridge, but it wasn’t obnoxious. Felt good, actually. Different, but still looked presentable, you know? Definitely think I can wear this to the office without raising too many eyebrows.

Maintaining it is the next step. Realized pretty fast this isn’t a wash-and-go style. Need to style it every morning. Takes about 5 minutes with the gel. And keeping the sides short means regular trips back to the barber, probably every 3 weeks or so, otherwise it’ll lose the sharp look. Might stick with that coconut oil thing now and then too, my hair felt pretty decent afterwards.

So yeah, that was my little experiment with the professional mohawk. So far, so good.
