Kate Mosss Lucian Freud Tattoo: Simple Story Behind the Famous Painting?

by Afra Jennings

Okay, so I saw this picture online of Kate Moss with this tiny little pig tattoo, and I found out it was done by Lucian Freud, the famous painter. Apparently, he did it for her years ago, and I was like, “I gotta try and recreate that!” Not, like, actually tattoo someone, but you know, just draw it.

First, I grabbed my sketchbook and a few different pencils. I wanted to get the lines just right, so I started with a really light pencil, like a 2H, I think.

Finding the Right Image

I spent ages looking for a good picture of the tattoo online. Most of them were kinda blurry, or you couldn’t really see the whole thing. Finally, I found one that was decent enough to work with.

Sketching it Out

  • I lightly sketched the basic shape of the pig. It’s pretty simple, just a few curved lines, really.
  • Then I went over it with a slightly darker pencil, like an HB, to define the lines a bit more.
  • I kept looking back and forth between the picture and my sketch, trying to get the proportions right. It’s harder than it looks!
  • I used the eraser for mistakes.

Adding Detail (or Lack Thereof)

The thing about this tattoo is that it’s not super detailed. It’s almost like a child’s drawing, which is part of its charm, I guess. So I didn’t want to overdo it with the shading or anything.

I just used a slightly darker pencil again, maybe a 2B, to add a little bit of shading in a few places, just to give it some dimension. and it finally came out.

The Final Result

It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It definitely captures the vibe of the original, I think. It was a fun little project, and it made me appreciate how much skill it takes to do even the simplest of tattoos (or drawings!). Now I feel like I can tattoo this little pig on someone. Maybe I should open a tattoo shop? Joke!
