Well, you see these young folks nowadays, they got this new way of wearing their jackets. It ain’t like how we used to do it, no sir. They call it “jacket hanging off arms”. It’s a sight, I tell ya. Just a jacket hanging off arms, like they’re too lazy to put it on right.
They just let their jacket hang off their arms, all loose and whatnot. Not on their shoulders like you’d think, but down lower, near the elbows sometimes. Makes no sense to me, but they all seem to be doin’ it. Like they are too busy or too important. I don’t know.
I seen it first on one of them TV shows. You know, the ones with the fancy city people. This one girl, she had a shiny jacket, all sparkly and such. And she just had it hangin’ there, not even on her shoulders properly. Looked like it was gonna fall right off, but it didn’t. Jacket hanging off arms, that’s what I think about that.
Then I started seein’ it around more. Even some of the young folks in town, they started doin’ it too. Not just with the fancy jackets, neither. Any old jacket, even them big puffy ones. They just let ’em hang. Jacket hanging off arms, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
Now, I asked my granddaughter about it. She’s a smart one, always on that phone of hers. She says it’s “fashion.” Says everyone’s doin’ it. Says it makes you look “cool.” I guess that’s a good thing, if you want to look cool. But seems mighty impractical to me. What if you need to run for the bus or carry somethin’?
- Your arms are free, I guess. That’s one good thing.
- But what if it rains? You’re gonna get all wet.
- And what if it’s cold? That jacket ain’t gonna keep you warm hangin’ like that.
- What if you need to zip it up? Gonna be a struggle, I bet.
This jacket hanging off arms thing, it just seems like a lot of fuss for nothin’. But these young folks, they like their trends. They like to be different. It is a style for sure. So, I just don’t say nothin’.
I remember one time, I saw a young man, he had a big leather jacket. You know, the kind the motorcycle fellas wear. And he had it just barely hangin’ on his arms. He looked like he was tryin’ to be tough, but it just looked silly to me. Like he was gonna lose his jacket any minute. How can he even ride a bike like that? What if the jacket gets stuck on the bike? That’s dangerous.
And the girls, they do it too. Even with them little jackets, the ones that are all cropped and whatnot. They just let ’em hang there, all loose and floppy. I don’t know how they don’t get cold. I wear my jacket the right way, on my shoulders, and it will keep me warm.
My granddaughter, she tried to show me how to do it. She put my old cardigan on, you know, the one with the buttons. And she just let it hang there, off her arms. She said I looked “chic.” I don’t know what that means, but it sounded fancy. But I couldn’t keep it on like that. It felt all wrong. And I kept thinkin’ it was gonna fall off.
Some say it’s about the style, you know. If you wear a bag, put it under the jacket. That’s what they say. I don’t know why they don’t just wear it properly.
This jacket hanging off arms, it’s a mystery to me. It is not for warmth, it is not for practical, I think it is for looking “cool”. But I guess if it makes them happy, then that’s all that matters.
I still think it’s a silly trend, though. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady. I like my jackets on my shoulders, where they belong. Keeps me warm and cozy, and I don’t have to worry about ’em fallin’ off. But jacket hanging off arms, if they like it, it is fine.
I guess it just make them feel good, or look good, this jacket hanging off arms. It is different, and they like to be different. Maybe one day I will try it again. Maybe not.
I asked the young people, and they said it is important to be careful, don’t reach too high, or the jacket will fall. They also say, choose a heavy jacket, so it won’t fall easily. It is a lot to remember, just for a “fashion”. Jacket is for keeping warm, isn’t it? I just don’t get it, this jacket hanging off arms.
They can wear the jacket however they want. As long as they are happy. That’s all that matters, right?
