Is Coachella weekend 1 or 2 better? Your essential checklist for picking the right weekend.

by Adelaide Davy

Okay, so let’s talk about this whole Coachella Weekend 1 versus Weekend 2 thing. I’ve been there, done that, and definitely spent way too much time overthinking it before my first trip. It’s like a legit question people have, and I totally get why.

My Journey Down the Coachella Rabbit Hole

So, picture this: my first time planning to go. I was glued to forums, Reddit, you name it. Everyone had an opinion, and a lot of folks were all like, “Weekend 1 is the ONLY way to go, man!” I started to panic, thinking if I didn’t get Weekend 1, I was getting some kind of diluted experience. The hype was real. I heard stuff like the grass is greener (literally), the surprise guests are more surprising, and all the celebs show up Weekend 1.

I remember trying to get tickets. It was a mad dash. Weekend 1 sold out in what felt like seconds. I missed it. My heart sank. I was like, “Great, now I gotta go Weekend 2, is it even worth it?” I actually managed to snag Weekend 2 passes later, and honestly, I was a bit bummed, thinking I was getting the leftovers.

Then I actually started to dig into why they even have two weekends. Turns out, it’s ’cause the demand was just insane. So many people wanted to go, and the place would sell out super fast. So, instead of just selling way more tickets for one weekend and making it a total zoo, they decided to just run the whole thing twice. Identical weekends, that’s the key phrase they use. So you don’t miss out just ’cause you weren’t lightning fast with your mouse.

So, What’s the Real Difference? My Take

After actually going, and talking to a bunch of people who’ve done both, or one or the other, here’s what I’ve figured out through my own experience and just, well, being there.

Weekend 1: The “First Dibs” Vibe

  • The Grass Argument: Okay, yeah, the grass is probably a bit more pristine. By Weekend 2, it’s seen some action. Does it ruin your experience? Nah. But if pristine polo fields are your jam, then maybe.
  • Surprise Guests: This is a big one for some. Weekend 1 gets the “shock” factor if a big surprise guest pops up. By Weekend 2, you’ve probably seen it on Instagram. But let’s be real, the main headliners, like if they said Lady Gaga or Green Day were headlining Friday and Saturday, they’re gonna be there for both weekends. The core lineup is the same.
  • The “Discovery” Element: You’re among the first to see the new art installations, the layout, how things are running. There’s a certain buzz to that.
  • Potential Kinks: Sometimes, Weekend 1 is where they iron out any logistical wrinkles. Maybe a sound system is a bit off for an early set, or a particular food stall runs out of something unexpectedly. Minor stuff, usually.

Weekend 2: The “Smoother Operator”

  • Operational Smoothness: By Weekend 2, the staff, vendors, and even the artists have had a full run-through. Things often just feel a tiny bit more dialed in. Performers might even be a bit more relaxed and polished after their first go.
  • Spoilers (Good or Bad?): You’ll know about any major surprise guests from Weekend 1. For some, this kills the surprise. For others, it builds anticipation, or helps you plan if you really want to catch that specific moment. I remember hearing Missy Elliott or T-Pain made surprise appearances one year, and by Weekend 2, people were hoping they’d show again.
  • The Crowd Vibe: This is totally subjective, but some say Weekend 2 is a bit more chill. Maybe the hardcore “see and be seen” crowd focuses more on Weekend 1. I found the energy amazing both times I’ve been around that time, but Weekend 2 just felt a little less… frantic, maybe?
  • Grass Condition: Yeah, it’s gonna be more worn. It’s a festival. Wear decent shoes.

My Final Thoughts: Does It Really Matter That Much?

Honestly? After all my stressing, I realized that both weekends are awesome. The core reason you’re going – the music, the art, the overall vibe – is pretty much identical. They don’t let you switch wristbands for a reason; each weekend is its own complete event. They have the same headliners, the same major undercard acts. You might see folks like Travis Scott or Charli XCX on the lineup, and they’re doing their thing both weekends.

If you’re someone who absolutely needs to be the first, and thrives on the absolute freshest experience, then aim for Weekend 1. If you prefer things potentially running a tad smoother and don’t mind knowing about some surprises beforehand, Weekend 2 is fantastic. Or, like me, if you just get whichever weekend you can get tickets for, you’re still gonna have an incredible time.

Don’t let the “which weekend is better” debate give you too much anxiety. Just pick one, go, and soak it all in. The Indio desert doesn’t really care which weekend it is when the music starts. You’ll make memories either way. My first “bummer” about Weekend 2 totally vanished once I was there.
