Okay, so I’ve been wanting to customize a pair of shoes for a while, and I finally decided to do it. I picked up some “red and white dunks” because, well, they’re classic, and the color combo is pretty fire. Here’s how the whole thing went down.

Getting Started
First, I grabbed a pair of white dunks. Finding them in my size was a bit of a mission, had to check a few stores, but I finally scored a pair.
Prepping the Shoes
-
I cleaned the shoes with some leather cleaner. Gotta make sure that paint sticks, right?
-
Next I used masking tape, the blue painter’s kind, and taped off all the areas I wanted to stay white. This part took the longest, gotta be super precise, or it’ll look messy. I spent extra time around the swoosh and the midsole.
Painting Time
-
I went with some leather paint. It took a few coats to get the red nice and vibrant. I applied thin layers and let each one dry completely before the next. Patience is key, folks!
-
After the red was totally dry, I carefully removed the tape. This is the scary part, but it all came off clean, thank goodness.
Finishing Touches
-
Once everything was dry,I sprayed the shoes with a leather sealant. Protect that hard work, you know? Make sure it protect the new red color well.
The Result
And that’s it! Now I’ve got a fresh pair of custom red and white dunks. They look pretty sick, if I do say so myself. It was a fun little project, and I’m already thinking about what shoes to customize next.
