How to make a max where the wild things are outfit: Simple DIY steps for an awesome look.

by Doreen Robbins

Okay, so I got this idea in my head, right? I needed a “Max where the wild things are outfit.” Not for anything super official, just for fun, maybe a themed party coming up, you know how it is. And I thought, “How hard can it be?” Famous last words, let me tell you.

How to make a max where the wild things are outfit: Simple DIY steps for an awesome look.

Getting Started – The Vision (and the panic)

First, I just kinda stood there in my room, thinking. Max. Wolf suit. Crown. Whiskers. Seemed simple enough on paper. I didn’t have a pattern or anything fancy. This was gonna be a “wing it” kind of project. I started by rummaging through my closet, hoping for a miracle. Maybe an old white hoodie? Some light-colored pants?

Found an old, slightly cream-colored hoodie. Close enough, I figured. And some old sweatpants that were a similar shade. Not perfect, but hey, this is about the spirit of the thing, not a movie replica. The key was just to get started.

Tackling the Suit – The Furry Dilemma

The main part, that wolf suit. I knew I wasn’t about to sew actual fur on it. Too much work, and where would I even get that much white fur on short notice? My first thought was maybe some kind of textured fabric paint. I went to the craft store, wandered the aisles like a lost kid. Found some fuzzy yarn, thought about gluing it on in patches. Nah, too messy.

Then I saw it – this big sheet of white felt. Lightbulb! I figured I could cut out some rough, “furry” looking strips and attach them. So, I bought a couple of yards of that. Got home, laid out the hoodie. Started cutting out these jaggedy, uneven strips from the felt. The idea was to make it look a bit wild and unkempt, you know? Not too neat.

Attaching them was the next challenge. Fabric glue. Lots of it. I just started gluing these felt strips all over the hoodie and pants. It was slow going. My fingers got sticky. There were little bits of felt everywhere. It looked pretty chaotic for a while. I just kept telling myself, “Trust the process.” I tried to layer them a bit, make it look kinda textured. It wasn’t exactly furry, but it had that wild, pieced-together vibe I was going for.

The Crown – A Royal Pain (Almost)

Next up, the crown. This is iconic Max stuff. I found some yellow construction paper. Thought it would be too flimsy. Then I remembered I had some gold-colored cardstock from an old project. Perfect! I sketched out a crown shape, those classic pointy bits. Cut it out. Tried to make it fit my head. It was a bit of trial and error, adjusting the size, making sure the points stood up okay. A bit of tape on the inside to hold it in a circle. Not bad, not bad at all. It wasn’t super sturdy, but it looked the part.

The Tail and Whiskers – Finishing Touches

Almost there. The tail! I took a long strip of leftover felt from the suit. Rolled it up into a sausage shape. Stuffed it with some cotton balls I had – the ones from the bathroom, yeah. Then I hand-stitched it closed. Not the prettiest sewing job, but it held. Attaching it to the pants? Safety pins. My trusty solution for everything. Pinned it securely to the back of the sweatpants.

Whiskers. Easy peasy. Just used some black face paint I had from Halloween. Drew on some simple whiskers on my cheeks. And then, the little nose bit. Perfect.

The Final Reveal – Wild Thing!

Okay, moment of truth. I put it all on. The felt-covered hoodie and pants. The gold crown (carefully!). Checked myself in the mirror. You know what? It wasn’t half bad! It was definitely homemade, a bit rough around the edges, but it was undeniably Max. The felt gave it a decent texture, the crown sat just right, and the tail had a nice little swing to it. I felt like letting the wild rumpus start! It took a few hours, a bit of glue, and a lot of “winging it,” but I did it. Totally worth the effort to see it come together. Sometimes the simple, homemade things are the most fun.
